Sounds good to me. That just looks like 4 to avoid and 1 to watch
I've just started watching Aso no Yoichi! and To Aru Majutsu no Index. Personally quite like them =].
A mech section is better - I've watched most of the Gundam series and movies, but it's more inclusive to say Mechs coz then some other titles might get stranded.Given the number of Gundam animes they should probably get their own section, along with a break down of which ones are worth a watch more than others by those that have seen enough to do so.
Edit: I add Tenjou Tenge
If you like cyberpunk Ghost in the Shell and Ergo Proxy are worth a watch.
The Ghost in the Shell anime and films were a major influence on the Matrix trilogy. The first two films are in a different continuity than the TV series and the third film though. It is set in the future where cyberization has become commonplace.
Ergo Proxy is set in the future where the remnants of humanity live in a dystopian world in domed citires.
Other major anime series are:
1.) Cowboy Bebop - this is considered a classic series. This set in the near future and is about some bounty hunters.
2.) Neon Genesis Evangelion - this spawned many other similar series and goes a bit nutty at the end though. A bit like the film Akira.
If you like futuristic fighters Macross Zero and Yukikaze are good too. The animation in both of these series is really great!!
Another good anime is Patlabor - this is a cop series with robots:

Just watched the first two episodes of Ga Rei Zero.
Am not impressed at all.
Especially with the first episode.... imo it's how not to do an anime =/...
Okay, so i'm being a little harsh, i do realise that you're probably supposed to have read the manga before watching it but really... just not impressed at all lol.
I'll get back to updating the list at some point I might chop some of my recommendations out as it's rather...long!
Just ordered myself the Noein boxset so hopefully it'll arrive soon (est. delivery from Amazon saysin 9March 2009...!!) and it'll either be a recommendation or not at all.
Regarding Ga Rei Zero episode 1; I liked how off the wall it was; seems to set things up nicely and from what I understand the anime precedes the manga (not that I've read it).
EDIT: 21 Jan 09
I got the Noein 'boxset' today Time to see if its dubbed or subbed. It'll be ebay'ed if it's dubbed.

Ahh Dir En Grey They are good. Check out Abington School Boys, they are a good band
I wanted to watch Noein back-to-back last night but the subtitles seem to be for the English dub and not literal to the Japanese audio. It annoyed me for episode 1 and I found it really hard to enjoy the show when all I seem to do is nit pick. I got through episode 2 ok so maybe I am getting used to the english subtitles OR I am subconciously ignoring most of it
An example of the subtitle problem are:
1. Names - the subtitles will say "Isami" when the voice actor is saying his first name (I think it's his first name), "Fujiwara"
2. Wording - the subtitles will say some filler when the single Japanese phrase used means "disappeared".
3. Timing - can be WOEFULLY bad at times as again, it seems to be timed for the English dub and not the Japanese original audio.
I've poked around the first DVD to try and find another subtitle stream but it seems there is only one.
Also, I am working through 0iD's list at the moment so still catching up
Wow. Quite a selection.
Further to those already recommended I'd like to suggest Metropolis and Cowboy Bebop as worth a look. My favourite ever is Princess Mononoke, but then I guess that's covered by "anything by Studio Ghibli".
