    The Anime Thread :)

2010/02/27 UPDATE - Added a new free legal streaming site

Hopefully with all the anime nutz on this forum this thread will be useful to them and to any other members To keep things tidy there will be no links or discussions by me about how to attain anime other than through legimate means.

I'll update this post with any new info that others throw at me either via PM or as a reply here. The thread purpose is kind of an anime resource thread, be it what animes are good to finding more information about a title. Blame 0iD for suggesting this

    So first section, resource!

For information about anime in general and explanations of terms used in describing an anime/character etc. (ie DFC, Pettanko, Ecchi, Tsundere):
    Anime News Network

For information on any specific title:
    url deleteted
This (now deleted link) site is also quite a powerful tool if you register in terms of keeping track of what animes you have seen and what animes you're interested in and it can help you find similar animes that you like via the "tag" system as well as "anime hint" once you populated your "My List" page.
Alternate website (the former is a little too close to being dodgy so will discuss with a mod)
    AnimeNFO

For information on similar animes (as recommended by other users):
    Anime Planet

    Where to buy:
    removed until cleared
    Otaku(Thanks to 0iD)
    Play(Thanks to 0iD)
    Good old Amazon
Not strictly a place to buy but...Crunchyroll...legal streaming (with exception to a few countries...inclusive of Japan) anime (of some TV Tokyo anime) WITH english subtitles .
Funimation more legal stream. (thanks to 0iD)
    DVD Pacific(Thanks to BeanBandit)
    Hobby Link Japan(Thanks to BeanBandit)
Sheffield Space Centre(Best to call them - Thanks to BeanBandit)
    Forbidden Planet (Thanks to TAKTAK)
    Anime United (Thanks to 0iD)
More free legal streaming (as always content is dependent on where you live)!!
    AnimeNewsNetwork

Section Two, Sleepy's recommendation list: <Disclaimer: My tastes are wide and varied and therefore my list is biased as is any recommendation list. Please review one of the above sites to get an idea of what the show is about and category it is before asking about any shows listed below. Thanks>

The animes will be listed with their romanji titles first with UK/US titles in parenthesis (if applicable). They are roughly grouped into categories to split the list up. Blue titles indicate recommendations put forward by other fans.

Do you mean Ghost in the Shell the 1995 movie, the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 2008 movie, the Ghost in the Shell Innocence Movie, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex The Laughing Man movie (summary of Stand Alone Complex, I think) or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society movie?

As for YukiKaze and The Big O I can add that in as a Cat-the-fifth recommendation If I have seen "The Big O", I don't remember (my friend slapped me for forgetting about the cat bus from..ahh...forgotten, one of the Studio Ghibli Films...it's early, I got into work so don't shoot me )

Trinity Blood I've watched but don't really remember much about it so either it is good but something even better was out at the time or I found it so-so and was a watch and forget show. I got the weekend so I can go through a refresher reading up on it. Again I'll add it as a Cat-the Fifth recommendation

EDIT: Oh and Ghost in the Shell TV series is on the list, please look under the romanji name of "Koukaku Kidoutai".

Oh can you tell me which Yukikaze you are referring to or both? There is "Sentou Yousei Yukikaze" and "Sentou Yousei Yukikaze FAF Koukuu Senshi"
Hellsing - Can elaborate on the two series? All I see is the original series and an OVA remake - the original being good at the start and then falling over badly in the second half and the OVA remake I've only seen a couple of episodes and it's added in some "slapstick humour" which didn't quite click with me.

Oo...I'll add as and when i can (with links). You'll have to be specific about Gundam....lots and lots of series, movies and OVAs.

Bleach/Naruto all follow the same pattern so you are not missing much. It's just good to watch some mindless (but not brutal) violence from time to time.
    The pattern is:
    1. I am some lame character but seem to have some sort of potential
    2. I am a lame character but get caught in some fight and win
    3. I am a lame character that thinks he is invincible
    4. Get butt kicked by a PROPER enemy
    5. Rise again like a phoenix to kick previous enemy's butt (or become best buddies)
    6. Repeat 3 to 5.

Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Alchemists are two animes you should check out 0iD

Man, that's what...2 years continuous viewing?? And that's only the recommended list as well.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)
Have you seen Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru a chein obu shōto sutorīzu abauto zea disutansu (5cm per second) and Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star)? Both are similar, superb animations!

edit: oops, 5cm per second is there!

Mind Game is also worth watching, although it's not a 'typical' Anime. Much in the same vein as Tokyo Godfathers.

Personally i would not be posting links to non-official products. Most of those titles are not studio releases, big give-a-way is the use of chinese and region 0.

Good reliable place for importing Anime DVD's is DVD Pacific. Been using them for a couple of years now, never had one problem, and never been taxed. To avoid tax/duties, make order's with only 1 or 2 disc's if cheap.

For all toys and models then Hobbylink Japan is one of the best out there. Based in Japan they have been around for years now, been using them myself for over 10 years now, and have a very big selection.

In the UK, then Sheffield Space Centre has over 25 years in the business, not a massive selection, but can order stuff in. Not the best web site, but phoning is always best. Been using them since 1993 for most of my Manga, very reliable.

    Recommendations.

    Eureka 7.
Urusei Yatsura (very old, but bloody good, imho)
Bubblegum Crisis. Original* OVA, not the damn aweful TV series remake.

*and yes i am aware of what i did there

Thanks for the heads up; I will remove that link (and hopefully you can edit yours too quoting me) until someone tells me it's fully legit.

I'll spend some time tonight updating the main post with all your suggestions and hyperlinking them to animeNFO

    Thanks guys, keep them rolling

    Re: The Anime Thread :)

The BIG O is very underrated!! It was made by the same people who did Batman:The Animated Series.
It is done very much in the style of 1950s big robot shows.

    Here are some details:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_O

Basically Sentou Yousei Yukikaze FAF Koukuu Senshi and Sentou Yousei Yukikaze are the same series:

I preferred the first version of Hellsing over the second. It did get a bit confusing towards the end but then so do many Japanese cartoons!!

    Re: The Anime Thread :)

It's a great thread but I wouldn't know where to start on that list

I know it's a lot like hard work and you are doing this out of pure geeky kindness but perhaps the recommendations (which are really quite a long list) would work better (in the future..) as a kind of, if you like x then you will like a,b, and c.

Whether the x be a genre within anime.. sci fi etc.. or just the most popular anime of that genre. Obviously we could just find this through discussion and or PM but rather than bother you with every little thing or having to search around for info on all of that lot.. maybe that will work better.

Just a thought and all based on your opinion but it would be useful.

I totally agree with you Staffsmike. The list will ever evolve, right now I am just trying to list it all out in alphabetical order and then the next job is to put them into categories of sorts. Quite a few of them are difficult, such as Macross series of anime, they are romance, scifi and drama. I may try a poll elswhere for categories. but I really want to keep things simple when listing these animes as all i would be re-hashing is all the other anime databases out there that have already categorised them.

Actually, here are the categories I was thinking about:

    Comedy (self explanatory really)

Ecchi (anything that is fan service based)

    Action (include sci-fi, fantasy etc.)

Drama (romance, slice of life etc.)

Weird (I think only one anime fits this category..lol)

    what say you?

I don't see Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann on the list, you need to fix that, and go watch it if you haven't

Gunbuster is a personal favourite and a good one if you like your sci-fi suitabley epic.

I'm going to leave it at that for the moment* since as staffsMike put it a long list is going to get pretty daunting quickly, as it is already... Breaking it up into rough genres would probably make things more managable, as might grouping together multiple titles of the same storyline.

*although I would only ever reccomend Kanon to be burned with a cocktail of every flammable chemical known to man rather than watched

    Just a suggestion but:

Unknowns - stuff that you've seen and thought was good but isn't widely known of

Mostly because I've never heard of The Big O before, and now I want to watch it...I want to know what else people are going to pull out of their hats...

Given the number of Gundam animes they should probably get their own section, along with a break down of which ones are worth a watch more than others by those that have seen enough to do so.
