lol @ Fail-leaf
But I don't think that's a fair comparison - apples vs. pears and all that. Still think the movie would be worth a watch even if you're a diehard fan of the novel. Worst case scenario you hate it, and reaffirm how good the book is

Well that's sort of what I meant.. All I want to hear when I listen to the fly leaf one is nirvana or something more imaginative.. but it just sounds like a really bad garage band. The film certainly makes me want to read the book yet again.. just doesn't make me want to watch the film.
I watch films far.. far too much and too many times to be considered healthy lol and this should be one I want to watch over and over.. and I just can't imagine doing that.
I just spent nearly three hours craning my neck in the front row but I've gotta say despite it's faults I think it's the best on screen translation of Moores work to date which considering the subject matter is an achievement in itself. I'm hoping for some kind of hyper extended directors cut on bluray if i'm honest because there aren't many comic book movies I can get more than halfway through without picking them to pieces in my head and this was one of the few for me.
I thought some of the soundtrack felt a bit out of place as well, the Dylan over the opening credits was an inspired choice though in my opinion.
are there anymore comic book series that are left to be created as a masterpiece like watchmen before holywood gets it and turns it into a stupid kids movie?
I watched the film in the weekend I though it was good. I have not read the graphic novel yet but I will do sometime. TBH it you keep comparing any film adaptation of a comic or novel people are going to be disappointed in one way or another - just because in print something seems good it will not necessarily translate well onto the big screen. Also time restraints are another thing - this is why series and mini-series exist!! The best way is to see films as an alternate retelling of the same story.
Being 2 seats away from knoxville on the front row, i have to say being that close was an interesting experience...
with regards to the soundtrack choices...
some of them did kinda feel like WTF... but they all got to a point in the film where what was on screen and the soundtrack clicked into place...
jimi hendrix for example clicked when you saw 2 of the characters walking through snow, and the lines
"A wild cat did growl
Two riders were approachin
And the wind began to howl"
if you dont see that then ur blind tbh...
I've never known anything about the watchmen, all i do know is that this film grabbed my attention and held it...
no way did it feel like 3 hours... i could have happily sat there for 4 watching this and covering more backstory (like the moving ink on Rorschach's face... head off into explaining where his "face" came from.. - i know now, but only because knoxville was there...)
loads of loose ends, but not enough that it detracted from the movie...
and yes... Malin Akerman... mmm...
haha

I saw this on tuesday... thoroughly enjoyed it. It was dark, quite deep at times but also very funny. Also I think it is quite close to the graphic novel, they managed to get the main storyline down and get enough of the background to each character in without cutting any big corners that could've made the film souless.

I thought the impending doom of the planet was quite sobering when you think about how the world is getting these days too... a little close to home...
just made it even more drawing as a film though.

I deffinatly made that connection which is what annoyed me more.. it's a movie not a music video. Dylan was a fantastic choice which gave me a bit of false hope.
I do agree with you Knoxville, it's probably the best Moore adaptation, and it was a visual feast, and Roschach couldn't have been better performed.
Like the fly-leaf thing though again.. to me it just tries too hard and doesn't do anything special with the original material and I don't mean it didn't follow the book perfectly, that's not what I was looking for.. there was just nothing special enough about it.
I think the killing joke's joker has influenced both burtons and Nolans Joker in it's own way. The story itself is no good for a movie adaptation imo, it would be over in five minutes. It's a beautiful example of a comic/graphic novel and a fantastically executed story with tonnes of character depth but there isn't enough depth to the story itself to create a movie. Well I hope I'm right anyway
I did hear that Dark Knight Returns has got Frank Miller's blessing as long as.. Zack Snyder directs.. lol
One book I reckon could work well as a film but could also die on its arse if the director isnt up to it is arkham asylum. Thought the art style used in the book was amazing and the story was great too.
yeah thats a better one for a film
Its nice to know i'm not alone about the sound track, i went to see it with an old friend of mine and she just didn't understand what i was talking about.
From the use of a bizzare version of Everybody wants to rule the world onwards it was just starting to really grind my gears!
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
Agreed, it's being made into a game currently if memory serves lets hope it turns out well
I see what you mean about Watchmen (at least I think I do) I didn't leave the film feeling like I'd witnessed something really special in cinema cinema either, thats not to say I didn't enjoy the film I just didn't feel I'd seen something truely exceptional as I did walking out of say Dark Knight last year.
But then I didn't leave dissapointed either which for a comic book movie is something pretty special for me at least, maybe having just watched the franchise reboots for Hulk and Punisher sent me in with lower expectations but as mmh said I could have easily sat there another hour and enjoyed it. I'll be much harsher on a directors cut when and if ones released but I'm impressed they managed to release a film that leaves me without a bad taste in my mouth and that people with no prior knowledge of the book can get into.
Oh and for anyone that's seen the film and is wondering what got lost in translation most of the major stuff is listed here - http://www.geekbox.net/archives/2009...ats-different/
