    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

I've got the feeling that if they had run all three episodes together it would actually be ok. I think the production is a step up from anything they've done before, and the lack of canned laughter etc. also lent it the feel of a more serious drama.. but it needed to be longer.

Yes - these have been written to be 30 minutes with adverts (29 minute recording on my PVR), whereas the older series are 30 minutes of programme (39 minute recording on my PVR).

    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

I watched, not sure really I think they might of intended to have an audience track, as there seems to be pauses and breaks in the dialogue (to let people laugh). Didn't flow well, Maybe I was imagining it.

and they seemed to be over doing it with certain traits, like the cats vanity.

    I like big suze though.

    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

I thought it was much better. Forget about it being red dwarf and think of it as a show about red dwarf, or a homage to the fans and it seems to work better.

    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

A lot of it is saying we havn't forgot about the fans, its putting the characters in a different scenario from what we are used to seeing them.

No doubt when it hits DVD you'll be able to watch it as a feature length type episode like they did with Pete and Back in the Red series 8 DVD.

I am liking it because its Red Dwarf, seeing the characters after all these years. Cat seemed a bit more his normal self last night doing his little spin and shuffle when he came out of the TV. Yeah the characters are older, but they have been stuck on a ship in deep space for the last 21 years.

    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

Enjoying it as a lifelong RD fan. It's good to see them back. It's a bit rusty as expected, but it's still funnier than just about anything else we dare to call comedy these days (hello Corden, Gervais etc)

Holly - as explained in episode 1, someone left their bath tap running for 9 years which overflowed, the skutters are still drying him out to this day.

Lots of homeage to the original series, as well as Blade Runner (if you've seen that, which I hope you have, it'll explain a lot of the little things you thought "eh?" about.
Definitely missing the laughter track, although I will slap anyone that says they miss the "canned laughter" as there's never been any of that.

    Looking forward to tonights.
    Moo.

    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

First episode with big(er) budget sets/etc started well but should have remained in space. Sending them back to earth seems like a way to avoid expensive sets & the storyline is pretty poor.
Just watched the second episode but so far very-very underwhelmed.

Personally I did't watch much of the last 2 series as they fell way below the standards of the older series, guess the trend continues

    Re: Red Dwarf Returns

I saw Friday's episode but missed the one on Saturday.

It seemed a lot like when some amateurs try to copy something great. The acting was off and the jokes were just badly regurgitated from old Red Dwarf.

Cheap and silly props are funny, cheap CGI just looks cheap and nasty. The skutters were irritatingly fake.

As I expected, it wasn't nearly as good as old Red Dwarf. It was pretty feeble.

I'm going to watch ep 3 because.. well just because it's RD and i love the characters.
But talk about tenuous links and a bizarre plot! That story line that takes them to the nose man... why? What did it achieve to the wider plot? Nothing.

I actually thought episode 2 was far better than the first one actually. I didn't find anything funny in episode one, but at least the second instalment had some laughs in it .

It's a scene from Blade Runner. The Chinese character in that scene made eyes for the replicants. It has been taking scenes from Blade Runner throughout for some reason, like the 'snake scale'.

Oh... i didnt get that. I'm a little relieved that there was a rationale for that then. It was beginning to seem quite uncomfortably stitched together...

Yeah, something just didn't seem quite right. Love the way it all tied in together at he end. Makes the whole thing worthwhile and a decent addition to the Red Dwarf name.

At least that makes one person out there that thinks like that

I was very dissapointed, pretty much on par with the later series
