    Harry Potter

Rudely dragged out of bed this morning we went to an early showing of the new Harry Potter. Overall though I quite enjoyed it, certain a far cry from the book which perhaps isn't such a bad thing in this books case and it had a tendancy to be a bit.. spotty with it's plot but if like harry potter it's certainly going to be worth a watch.

This one tries to be humourous while remianing dark and it works quite well I thought, although the Mrs was far from amused throughout really.. There is a lot of teenage romancing, Harry becomming quite the pimp it seems (you'll see lol) and some papers seem to have slammed it for that and the language but take no notice imo.. it's good.. (for a potter movie).

May I be the first to say "it's for children"?

There, it feels better to have got that off my chest. All the sophisticates on the train with a copy of a Potter book tucked up behind their copy of the FT... honestly

    Still, whatever makes you happy.

    Re: Harry Potter

I'd say the films progress in viewing age.. so this one is certainly more for teenagers not children but yes.. A younger audience I suppose.

    Re: Harry Potter

Are children's books just for children or are they for the young at heart? The Harry Potter books are another series in the same genre as Just William, Billy Bunter, The Famous Five, the Lone Pine club, Swallows and Amazons, Jennings ... and many others. They are all fantasy, many based around boy's boarding schools, and hopes and fears of youth. Perhaps as adults reading these transports us back to those childhood times and a reminder of the books that we may have enjoyed as children.

Harry Potter on one level the triumph of good over evil and adversity (on another it is a lonely orphan escaping into a fantasy world where he is cast as a hero) but on all levels it is a good story. The films capitalise on the fantasy with some spectacular effects - the quidditch matches in the earlier films are brilliant! (I haven't seen the latest - yet!)

Naw, I'm the world's biggest hypocrite when it comes to literature, I read all kinds of junk. I just can't help spotting the oneson the train where you know it's the one and only book they'll read this year. Stewart Lee does an awesome skit about them

Nothing wrong with it being the one and only book they rea this year (along with the most recent Dan Brown). But braging about it like it is an achievement is what Stewart Lee is on about if I remember right.

I enjoy the HP books, along with Terry Pratchett and the Young Bond series by Charlie Higgson. I have no problem with people seing me read them and wouldn't bother trying to hide them with a paper etc. I also wouldn't bother getting the "adult cover" edition, standard "kids" one is fine

I do intend going to see this when I get home, but like just about every other film these days, I'm pretty sure I'll never get round to it.

Should I be worried that I can remember all of these? [I had forgotten Lone Pine Club - but I remember reading that series as well!]

    Re: Harry Potter

I went and watched this yesterday and I have to say a film "for children" had quite an older population. Myself and a group of friends mostly aged 17 were amongst some of the youngest there - I recall seeing only 3 little kids out of a cinema screen that can fit 250.

I heard a rumour that there splitting the last book into 2 films? Any truth in this?

    Re: Harry Potter

Kids are at school so no big shock there, early nights etc.. But then it depends what time you saw it. But, as I mentioned before this movie will be geared more towards you at 17 (probably 14-17) than kids younger than you as that is how the books (and films) develop over time.

That's not to say kids won't find enjoyment but chances are it is the people that started reading harry potter when young and have now grown up that will enjoy these movies.

Yep the last book will be in two installments. The next movie is released winter next year and is said to be a "road movie" to deal with the major part of the last books travelling and then the final part will deal with the battles etc.. to be released summer 2011. Given some of the missing details from this movie that were actually fairly necessary I am expecting part 1 to deal with this and actually be quite good but who knows.

    Re: Harry Potter

I seen it tonight and wasn't impressed to be honest. The fact that they left the hogwarts battle out at the end really annoyed me. They also changed things from the book which will **** it up for the last two films.

But seriously, the end was such an anti climax! What about Bill (or lack thereoff)? We don't see anything about his scars or won't he have them in the next film? There is a huge list of things that i could go on about but to summarise.

The majority of the film was really good but the ending let it down BIG TIME.

I'm not too concerned of things they've missed, they've been doing that from the start and I'm sure the two final parts can still wrap it up.

I do agree the battle is a big loss though, it was very important and given some of the stunning visuals the film has.. it seems a shame they didn't flex that a bit further with at least some resistance.

I thought they way they dealt with Dumbledores death was actually quite good though, a different take on the situation for Harry, but he wasn't left powerless in the movie which will hurt him even more I think.

    Re: Harry Potter

But the idea was for the DA to try and hold hogwarts in this battle which will then lead nicely to the last film when they make their stand. But to me the loss of the battle was such an anti climax and if im honest i cant believe they made it out. Also most of the extra characters were left out almost completely like neville etc. Yet he is meant to make such a big impact in the last films. Theres just a complete lack of consistency in the films which in my opinion ruins them. In fact if i was a billionaire id remake everyone the way it should have been done!!

    Re: Harry Potter

I thought the lack of funeral was actually a worse omission but nevermind. There will be a big battle, sounds like the last part will pretty much be one big one so I'm not too worried. It's a shame but not a big loss to me.

I don't think they could make much sense out of adding in the characters they have missed all the way through now. Bill and Fleur will just make no sense really.. so I'm not expecting a wedding..
