    The Dish
Based on real events of the moon landing in 1969 staring Sam Neill and set in the small town of Parks, Australia.

It's a great little film, it's a different take on the moon landings and shows how people were in complete awe of the event. It seems very British (lots of tea, sandwitches and pipe smoking), but with a lighter heart of rural Australia.

One of my favourite films, well worth a watch. Appeals to my inner geek too

    Where The Wild Things Are

    Where The Wild Things Are
I remembered this book vividly from my childhood, so when I notice it's on a tthe cinema this morning in the kids Saturday Morning Pictures (a quid each) I jumped at the chance.

I was prepared for some surreal monsters & merry making, but I so wasn't prepared for the emotion this film carries. Seen through the eyes of a child the story is one of innocence & fun, but through an adults eyes, it's a maelstrom of emotion. I have to say, all credit to the screen writer(s) and Director for carrying a children's book of a few pages to a full length feature.

Without spoiling it too much for anyone tempted to go & see it, please do, it's a deeply involving & emotion riddled film. The young protagonist's emotions and family embodied by the Wild Things and the way his personal journey is portrayed is both tragic & touching at the same time.

A little bit of genius imo, definitely one for adults to absorb the subtleties & for kids to enjoy the masterful way the Wild Things are brought to life. Go see it.

Re: The HEXUS Movie Review Thread

I really wanted to see that when it came out last year. I loved the book when I was little, and the trailer looked amazing. I just never got round to it. There is only one showing in Aberdeen, tomorrow at 10:00 and I'm not going to a kids showing by myself

I'll just have to get it on BluRay in a few months.

Well in this case it's certainly the former, but here goes anyway. Me and my girlfriend were off to the cinema on Saturday, but with absolutely sod all on at the moment we ended up watching...

Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief

Behind this modern-day rendition of the USA hides a secret world - one of Greek gods, godesses and demi-gods.

Early on, Percy Jackson, the teenage main character, discovers that he is actually Perseus, son of Poseidon - and all of the gods apart from his father believe that he has stolen Zeus' lightning bolt. With a war of the gods on the verge of breaking out, he has to go into hiding from those who want to steal the bolt from him, and prepare to venture out and ultimately convince Zeus of his innocence.

It doesn't take long to realise that this is an adaptation of a book, as the characters literally dash from location to location with minimal backstory behind the individual events - clearly massive amounts of the story, and probably many filmed scenes, were cut to keep the film down to a length suitable for younger viewers. At one point, we're helpfully informed by one of the characters that 5 days have passed over the course of a 15 minute scene, with a convenient plot-point to explain it - which coincidentally means that the reasonable time limit for Percy to reach Zeus becomes ridiculously small and therefore ensures a typically Hollywood last-minute sprint for Mount Olympus.

In this cutting process, the flow has been wrecked and it feels very cobbled together. With such a wide array of talent in the film, this was fairly disappointing - Steve Coogan appears as Hades, but is on-screen for such a short length of time it's not even easy to gauge whether it was meant to be a comic cameo or not.

The setting is also somewhat odd - with all the mention of Greek Gods, you begin to expect - at least at some point - to see some sweeping shots of Greece, with some of the breathtaking ancient architecture. Instead though, you discover that, rather bizarrely, Mount Olympus, the Underworld, and other vitally important locations are all based in the United States - and less breathtaking modern US-based replicas of Greek buildings are the settings for large portions of the film. Presumably the Athenians and the Spartans were from New York and Washington "in real-life". Add to that some entirely unconvincing characters, partly due to some dodgy acting and some incredibly dodgy script-writing, and you begin to wonder what this film has going for it. Percy Jackson apparently never considered that being able to sit underwater for 7 minutes without batting an eyelid was somewhat unusual and also never noticed his ability to heal injuries with water, whilst his utterly typical and nondescript love interest mentions that she has hardly ever stepped foot out of the secret Greek Demi-God retreat into the "real world", i.e. the USA, and then moments later looks like she's never been more at home and readily drops the names of US institutions and government agencies into conversation.

All-in-all, you can't help but feel this was a good story at some point, but it has been severely let down in this film adaptation. Whilst I don't think it was worthy of a 3+ hour epic, trying to set the scene and then accurately represent 5 distinct "quests" within the time limit proved utterly impossible, leaving gaping holes all over the place and fairly sparse action scenes.

It's hard to recommend the film... I was tempted to say that maybe it's one best reserved for fans of the books, but they'd probably be angered by its inevitably poor representation of what I gather was actually a very popular book, so instead I'll warn you - hold fire, and wait for something better

Just to note something here: this is, in fact, the case within the book. The books are set in the USA. The flaw isn't in the film here, but rather in the book. It's conveniently explained away at some point within the book, I think there's mention of portals, and rebuilding 'at the centre of civilization' or some other such convenience..

Indeed... that was one of the very few points where it seemed that the book was dodgy - and hence the film, as opposed to most of it where it appeared to be largely the film's fault.

Re: The HEXUS Movie Review Thread

@jim - I thought it was worth mentioning where the film kept to the book. Sadly, many films seem to only use general concepts now. I keep on meaning to draw up a list of films that kept best to the books, but have the feeling that I'll be left with books that I didn't really enjoy, or films I found too long.

    Harry Brown

Set in Londons infamous Elephant & Castle district "Harry Brown" tells the story of an elderly Royal Marine (played by Michael Caine) and his struggle to come to terms with the gang violence and drug related crime that occurs on the estate near his home, a struggle that eventually leads to him dispatching his own brand of vigilante justice upon those that terrorise it's law abiding residents.

I wasn't expecting much to be honest, I'd almost completely written it off as a British version of Taken but I'm glad I didn't. The portrayal of british teen gang culture is spot on right down to the incredibly foul language and dupstep/grime background music, the latter no doubt because of Plan B, Chase & Status and Pete Tongs involvement in the soundtrack. It's not short on acting chops either, obviously Caine steals the show but Sean Harris and MC/rapper Plan B (real name Ben Drew) both put in pretty memorable performances as a pair of particularly nasty characters.

It's a bit dark and almost a bit too grim at times but it's well written enough that I never had trouble with the notion of Michael Caines character giving the neighbourhood hooligans some hell and I was thoroughly pleased that I'd taken the time to watch it after the credits rolled. Definitely worth watching.
