Exit through the gift shop - A Banksy Film
Watched this last night and really enjoyed it, Love the work of Banksy and this film was a good insight in his life and that of Thierry Guetta the crazy french filmmaker who has followed him around and some great street artists.
The whole MR Brainwash is brilliant!!!
I dont want to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it but for those who have
**spoiler**
Did you think it was a hoax?? I believe the life and work of Thierry and the meetings was true and his crazy film he made "life remote control", but bansky wanted to use the footage himself to make a more watchable film so he sent him off to create his own art and became mr brainwash, that is where I think banksy was behind it all, using the filmmaker as a front for banksy's work...Genius!
Anyone who's into street art needs to watch this film/documentary..

Loved it ! Was really impressed with the sheer dedication of Thierry with his videoing over the years and the access he got to the artists - and as for the second half - he's taken Thierry's work and assembled a really good documentary and then finished it with a new Banksy, from street art, to installations, to film, he continues to impress.
**Spoiler Reply**
I'm not sure it was as much of a hoax as some are making out, Banksy made the point in the film that Street Art is not about money and success. To me it's a statement that his work being taken as "art" and sold for massive amounts is getting to the point that it's going too far. The phone box for example was a fantastic piece of installation art but rather than leaving it where he installed it they removed it and sold it at Sotherby's for half a million dollars !
I think the whole Mister Brainwash was done with Banksy and possibly Shepard Fairey coaching Thierry and with the intention of showing the shallowness of the "art" world by showing they can create an "artist" from nothing to selling for millions in 6 months purely with media and hype.

Glad you enjoyed it and I think your pretty much spot on describing the powers behing Mr Brainwash, It's good to hear a different opinion about the whole making millions out of street art.
Nice point.

The millions for art point was made so well in the film with the bit showing the LA collector saying how she'd taken down her favourite Picasso from display to put up the Banksy piece she bought and all the collectors she knew had a Banksy now - WTF ! It's like the people who buy limited edition £200,000+ sports cars and have them delivered with no fluids as they'll NEVER be driven - totally missing the point.
I loved the bit where Banksy showed his £10 notes with Lady Di's face instead of the queen and the "Bank of Banksy", and that he'd given a few out at a festival for promotion purposes not realising how realistic they were until people started spending them at the festival !!
Then it dawned "Oh S**t! i've made counterfeit money !!!" - Priceless !
:)
