    Recommend me some films!

For Xmas I got a month subscription to lovefilm to go with a two months for free offer.

I have about 30 odd titles and am on the lookout for other films people may have seen that they thought were good. I'll watch almost anything and please bear in mind we may not have teh same tatses!

I'll watch most things but no sopping romance.

    Thanks in advance!

I should start listing when I had so far:-

*I either never finished or angry that I did. Quite rare.
** Okay, will not aim to watch again; would watch on TV. Probably largest category.
    *** Good, could watch again.
**** Impressed; would recommend. Usually with a standout feature such as dialogue or storyline.
    ***** Must watch. Very rare.

Atonement **** enjoyable and I hate romance. Still cannot understand the ladies motives though........
AvPR2 * Series cash in. Could quite possibly be the last film I watch in either series in protest. I mean what was the point?
Battle - Los Angeles * Wibble.
Black Death ** starts out okay but then you realise there really isn't a storyline there; could have been so much better.
Book of Eli - disc was faulty. ** Alright but no mad max. Should have called it the book of ee-lie.
    Captain America **
Dorian Grey * couldn't finish; could be better.
    The Expendables * meh
Four Lions ** Still confused over what it had tried to be. The humour has been cut quite sharply with thoroughly depressing episodes.
Fracture *** Nice film; Hopkins is at his serial killer best.
The girl who played with fire *** Not bad but not up to the book>
Inception ***. Enjoyed, nice idea for a film and perhaps takes itself (or leonardo does) too seriously.
    The international ** Ok
    Iron Man 2 ** okay
The Jacket **** I do enjoy these kind of films.
Kiss Kiss bang bang ** Not bad
Kontroll *** Really liked this; zaney Hungarian drama.
Kung Fu Panda *** Not bad at all. Kung Fu with cuddly animals.
The Losers *** Better than your average action lark.
    Midnight Run ***
Monsters vs Aliens **** Really enjoyed. Great one liners.
Moon *** Not bad at all. Was expecting something more taxing and rewarding.
    Predators ** Okay.
    Pride and glory ** okay
Salt ** Could have been quite good if it was not so predictable.
Shutter island *** left me a little confused. Would watch again if only to see if I could decifer the end (or perhaps change my opinion.......).
Star trek ** Star trek with a shallow make over. No real understanding of the characters as they tell you everything you have to know at the right time. And how dare they change history in the name of a cash in?
Street Kings ** Enjoyable but predictable. James Ellroy would have I suspect included more character and dialogue such as that went to make LA confidential so good.
This bittersweetlife. ** Korean crime drama.
The tournament ** Battle royal with adults. Not bad but again expected so much more. Features the charming Kelly Hu.
Unknown ** Bit predictable but quite good.
The wrestler **** well done but thoroughly depressing.
Zombieland **** Glorious. Shallow dialogue and characters. Great funny bits and thats before we get to BM.

    Re: Recommend me some films!

Midnight Run with DeNiro is awesome, granted its an 80's flick but it still lives strong by todays standards. DeNiro is the bounty hunter and Grodin is the mark. hey have to get from one side of the states to another but with hilarious mishaps along the way including the mob and fbi, then throw in another bounty hunter and you have perfection!

Black Rain with Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. 80's cop flick where 2 american officers have to take a yakuza back home. Here they get mixed up in the whole situation meaning they have to work outside the local laws. Typically 80's but geat non the less!

Shawshank Redemption, one of the greatest films of all time (and my favourite movie) seeing Tim Robbins locked up for apparently murdering his wife, Morgan Freeman plays by far his best role ever as one of the only friends within the prison. Granted a prison setting but stirring and heart warming from start to finish.

    Brilliant film!

    Also add:

    Oldboy
    La Haine
    Seven Samurai
    City of God
    Leon
    Taxi Driver
    Spirited Away
    The Departed
    Raging Bull
Once Upon a Time in America
    Inglorious Basterds
    Up
    Gran Torino
    Hotel Rwanda
    Heat
    The Deer Hunter
    Amores Perros

That should be a nice mix for you ranging from 1954 to present day.

You can't really go wrong with anything directed by Scorsese, Tarantino, Brian De Palma, Oliver Stone or Michael Mann.

Seven Samurai - My favourite film from about the the age of eight. Difficult to find a version longer than the 3:10 commonly found. They usually cut out the love story between the young samurai and the peasent girl.
City of God - Saw in the cinema - wow; wonderful colours. There is a mini series followup which is quite fun "City of Men"
    Leon - seen
    Taxi Driver - seen
    Spirited Away- seen
    The Departed - seen
    Raging Bull - own
Once Upon a Time in America - seen recently
Inglorious Basterds - I hate this film.
Up - Will add later although having to watch peppa pig with my son I am leaning towards something more gritty!
    Gran Torino - seen
    Hotel Rwanda- seen
    Heat -seen
    The Deer Hunter - seen
Amores Perros - seen - very good recommendation though.

    Thanks again!

Yes and a remake is a BAD idea imo.

This is a quote from aintitcool dated Apr2010

If you thought the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake was dead, you're wrong. Although Gerard Butler is not attached anymore (however I did hear some slight rumblings that he might not be completely down for the count) it seems New Line ain't willing to let it go.

According to THR's Heat Vision Blog New Line has brought on Breck Eisner who recently directed THE CRAZIES, which met with good critical reception and decent box office, to direct.

This is an interesting move as Eisner is also attached to the Flash Gordon remake.

Borys Kit says that Allan Loeb draft is sticking, which serves as a semi-remake/semi-prequel telling Snake's origin... Hopefully that doesn't mean baby Snake... but I imagine it's seeing Snake's failed robbery that gets him in cuffs in the first place.

Eisner's got a big job ahead of him, but I gotta say he's a major step up from Len Wiseman. After seeing what he did to Die Hard I'd enter some kind of depression if he actually farted around in Snake Plissken's world.

If you like action films, then Taken is a really good one - slightly cleverer than most.
Serenity was quite good fun - SciFi in the style of Joss Whedon (of Buffy fame)
The Green Mile - classic - can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet!
I assume you've seen the Matrix?
