just got the series for the kindle. I'm 40% though the first book and really enjoying it. The books do give a lot better idea of the passage of time where the tv series did seem to gloss over that a little.
I just bought the first book from Tesco this morning - now I just need to find time to read it.

The first series i thought was great, watching it with the girlfriend who has read all the books so far (still waiting for the next one) and she tells me it was a fairly close adaptation but that i must read the books. I intend on picking them up very soon, or just stealing her kindle.
hmmm just been looking on amazon and ppl are kicking off saying there are no maps included in the kindle version. Prolly a really daft question but are the maps really that important to vote down books?
It was one reviewer, and tbf, i don't think it detracts anything from the story, its just geography. I'm pretty sure if you looked online you would find.... oh that took forever http://www.angelfire.com/id/theblackthorn/map.html . Fair enough its not actually on the kindle, but pretty sure you could have a quick glance at it, read the books and have done with it.
For me, the books are about the story and the telling of it, the sex (theres lots), the political intrigue (theres more), the dragons (theres some), the backstabbing (theres a little...) and the killing off of characters you love (every damn one of them), its not about the maps.
Small loss to the kindle version in my eyes.
It's not that well written, the style of "character per chapter" makes the plot very slow to build and a lot harder to follow than it needed to be. Part of me feels that the author is writing so many "major" characters in to let him kill them off.
I'm not exactly rushing out to pick up the next book, even with my voracious reading appetite

I have to disagree with that, I really like the character per chapter. Every character has there own view point and in most cases different stories the reason so many characters get killed of is so that the reader actually cares if a character is in danger. I mean the plot builds very quickly once the Ned cops it in the books..... its just there are several different threads to it. some of the characters are fantastically well written Joffrey and Cerise in the books are just so damn nasty I want to commit physical violence towards them!
but each to their own... that's my take in on it.

Thread revival - I began watching this yesterday, just finished episode number 4.
Wow, just wow.
Brilliant stuff, i am fascinated by so many of the characters, particularly Tyrion Lannister.
Well written, well acted, well produced.... and going to have to get hold of the books

Agreed. I watched the first series in one sitting. Riveting stuff, really left me wanting more. Started reading the books recently since I didn't fancy waiting 5 years or more for more of the story. As good as it is, the TV series just isn't quite enough for me. I'm glad it came along though, without it I'd have missed out greatly.
