    3D Movies

What does 3D have now that it didn't have when they made 'Friday the 13th Part III'?

Aside, that is, from an audience that cares more about visuals and less about plot.

3D was a failure before, it's annoying and adds nothing to the cinema experience except cost.

Is it's resurrection just a response to declining cinema attendance, now that people have high def at home?

Why have so many mainstream movies now added 'things flying toward the fourth wall for no reason'?

    Re: 3D Movies

I'm getting a 3DTV next week, looking forward to some 3D gaming on my PS3 but yet to see many 3D movies land on Bluray. Think its really going to take off later this year, Sony are releasing a 24" 3D gaming TV at a decent price later this year.

I thought Avatar in 3D on the IMAX screen was phenomenal, really brought Pandora to life.

3d tvs are very good to be fair, i used to work at comet and made sure i forced people to take a look at them just because 90 percent of people then re considered (even if only for a second) after seeing it.

"3D will only be good when the picture can come out the screen and slap me in the face"

however i personally 3D can be good, movie maker just need to figure out that it only works some of the time for example pirates 4 its okay but seign it in 3d just doesn't add anything whereas Avatar works pretty well (shame about the story not sure Fern-gully/pocahontas needed remaking)

    Re: 3D Movies

Avatar does "slap you in the face" pretty much, even on my home system, certain scenes the space between me and my tv screen is full of stuff that isnt really there!

I personally love it, yes it has it's faults but the more of it you watch, the more you learn to relax your eyes and let the director move them, most headaches (imo) are caused because people look around too much in awe of the 3D and start trying to focus on objects that are out of focus on film.....of course they will never come into focus...and it does cause strain.

It's just a case of adapting to a new technology.

    Re: 3D Movies

I watched wanted yesterday with my girlfriend and she said at the start it would be great in 3d. then throughout the film I was just think yeah it would really work in 3D. The number of time things come out at you and stuff it would just be an even better experience.

Personally I can't stand it, and half the time the effect won't work for me anyway. Think Walter Murch is spot on tbh.

    "Forced"?

Any sales assistant that tries to force me to look at something after I've told him/her I'm not interested is going to be forced to watch me walk out the door, to another shop.

Suggest? okay. Advise? Fine. Any more than that, and I'm outta there.

And I'm not at all interested in 3D, and do not expect to have to justify to sales staff why I'm not.

That'll be the director just adding shots that would stand out in 3D. Nothing really to do with the film itself.

Well i've never found 3d to add anything to the story of a film purely a visual thing. Also since wanted isn't in 3D the shots weren't added for that purpose.

    Re: 3D Movies

3D only works if the screen is being enough to be outside the scope of your peripheral vision. IMax is fantastic but the standard cinema screen just isn't big enough.

I think Tron used it well, when outside of the grid it was 2D, inside the Grid it was 3D, very good use IMO.

Although it does make my eyes burn some times.

    Re: 3D Movies

My only gripe with the whole 3D thing is it always looks like 2D layers on top of each other whereas reality gives true depth with lines and curves that gradually appear further away in relation to the shape of the object, 3D TV and even movies seem a little like cardboard cutouts layered one on top of the other and although the basics work, the eye can still tell something isn't quite right.

Might be just me, but I doubt it, 3D still has a long way to go to convince me!

    Re: 3D Movies

I'm looking forward to the release of Titanic in 3d, in April, although I don't normally watch 3d movies as they give me a headache too - Plus I would rather save my money and use good old 2d
