Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

Anybody else had the opportunity to catch this?

Saw it yesterday evening and came away pleasantly surprised - a lot better than I thought it'd be!

Much better than the 2001 remake, and while I'm not sure it's technically a prequel to the 1968 original, I thought it worked well as an origin story.

Also worth giving the special effects a mention. I'm not particularly keen on CGI, but the motion-capture effects in this movie were at times truly outstanding.

Worth a watch if you enjoy the apes mythology. I particularly enjoyed the homages to the Heston films. Might not be for everyone though - my sister-in-law found it very slow to get going.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

I'd heard the trailer pretty much gives the entire plot of the film away. Personally, the apes faces just look "wrong" - in an uncanny valley sort of way.

I've not seen the film yet so, perhaps, I'm incorrectly prejudging it?
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

I watched in the Cinema a few weeks ago, I quite liked it. One of the better films I've seen recently at the Cinema.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

I personally wasnt that impressed with the movie. I wasnt convinced with the story i guess. Althought that may be because I havent watched the orignal movie(s), thought I wouldnt call the movie a waste of money.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

I also really enjoyed it - I have the original 5 film box set, might give them a re-watch.
On a related note, I always really liked (for it's time) the make-up etc of the Apes faces, until last year when I was fortunate to attend a presentation & discussion of 2001 Space Odyssey, and learnt that Apes stole from Kubrick!

I really really liked it. Took me by surprise to be honest.
Though the ape speaking was cheesy in a way.... but there was no way of it not being lol

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

aye, me n her enjoyed it too, cgi was quite subtle, as it is on most new films, a few cheesy moments but not enuff to spoil it.

    9/10
    Cheers, David
