Magician by Raymond E Feist
Fantastic Fantasy Novel, an enthralling story and the start to a brilliant series!
Now theres a recommendation that shows one mans vintage wine is another mans poison.
Magician is badly written pulp fantasy imo, and it put me off Feist completely. Some guy wandering around a bunch of caves just happens to find a suit of magical armour, feck orf.
Might as well be reading Alan Dean Foster's Shadow Keep, which is basically "oh look, theres a big bad guy in that castle, lets get some companions together (including some weird kangaroo type beast) and go kick his ass". Thankfully his spellsinger series was much better.
As I said tho, to each his own

The Sorcerer's Apprentices by Lisa Abend
Ever wondered what its like to work at one of the world's best restaurants? (el Bulli) This book covers the journey of several interns or 'stagiaires' and how they are pushed to their limits.

the complete playboy centerfolds not much to read there though
Decisive Battles of the Western World; J F C Fuller.
War, battles and history in chapters you can finish in an evening. Pretty hard going but very rewarding. I have the abridged version from 1970; the none abridged version may be a bit of a toughie.
It's not one book, but I'd have to recommend the "His Dark Materials" series.

Have to recommend "The Stainless Steel Rat" stories in light of Harry Harrison's death.
The original being the best - but "Born" and "Drafted" adding interesting prequels to the original books.

Much agreed on that, havent read the Rat books in years. Bill the Galactic Hero was funny too

If you like fantasy novels, and have played the Diablo series of games, I'd highly recommend those novels by Richard A.Knaak, or even ofc Game of Thrones series =)
No love for HP Lovecraft?
Short stories make it difficult to pin down one book, but you can pick them up on Kindle.
I think The Rats in the Walls is a very good one to start with.
Richard A Knaak wrote the Huma book for the Dragonlance series waaay back when the Companions books were popular (still should be, well written, well thought out books with some solid characters). It was one of the better books, a lot of drivel was published using Weiss and Hickmans characters.
Funnily enough, I picked up volume 1 and 2 of the Lovecraft stories in graphic novel form to. Interesting take on the stories in art form also to see how an artist interoperates the writing.
It's not the hardest read ever, I blasted through it and it takes a good twist in the story, still an enjoyable read.
I have now moved onto Kraken which a mate got me for my birthday, not that far into it but finding it hard to put down.
