Its the end of the band as we know it? I feel fine.....
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
Should have called it a day before Around The Sun. I'll admit I haven't heard their newest album, so can't really comment, but I can't imagine it would be that great, I'm sure I would have heard if it was good.
Still a shame though.
Joke from twitter:
"I fainted in the curry house when I heard REM had split up. That's me in the korma."

Wanted to see them again one last time. Gutted.
Live they were something else - they just got better with age (though I'd have killed to see one of their intimate early 80's gigs in the flesh).
Accelerate was too heavily produced to be great, but the songs themselves were good. They were a great set of songs live.
Collapse Into Now is more diverse than anything since New Adventures (and arguably Out of Time), and has some great feel good moments. It got strong reviews, but while it's not a classic it certainly deserved better than it charted (though that's R.E.M. all over - just look at their great 80s albums and how well they did commercially).
Collapse Into Now is certainly worth the money.
The problem with R.E.M. is that it took multiple listens to get into their albums. Every album they've released gets stronger the more it's played, and no more so than their recent ones. In my eyes 'Up' is now one of their strongest records. 'Reveal' is an epic summer listen. Around the Sun is the only blot on their copy book - I think even the most ardent R.E.M. fans struggle to find it anything other than ordinary.
Strong from the off though. 'Murmur' may only have sold 200,000 copies in the first year, but Rolling Stone Magazine voted it the best album of 1983... ahead of Thriller.
