Films that should never be remade

Chatting a marketing chappy from Cineworld today and he told me that they are remaking Highlander...

WHY???? ok the effects are pretty shoddy by todays standards, but who cares? Its a classic film and its a real shame they didnt do a sequel.

They are remaking The Crow, which is my favourite film of all time, and I really cannot see the point, its perfect as it is.

Total Recall is being remade, which isnt even true to the original Philip K Dick story, so is a remake or reimagining? Not too fussed on this one, but again, is there a real point?

These films are not old, this isn't remaking 50 year old B+W movies or recreating movies with special effects and techniques we didnt have back then. These movies have not dated that badly (cept maybe final quickening scenes in Highlander hehe). Its purely money grubbing from a marketplace of people that have good memories of a film.

So, list below the movies that should never be remade

let me start you off with

    The Hustler
    Bullitt
    The Crow
    Big Trouble in Little China
    Ferris Buellers Day Off
    The Breakfast Club

Theres some of mine, theres many many more, but add your own and please be as outraged as me

Re: Films that should never be remade

I heard that there is to be a remake of Point Break, and I just can't see it working at all. One of my favorite films, and its to be set in the world of extreme sports. I mean how is that going to make it any better

Its all about the name, and that is the most frustrating part. The trouble is the big $ signs with remakes and sequels/prequels.

I also agree with Bullitt and would add Dirty Harry to that as well. Although I think it can work. Not exactly a remake but the Christopher Nolan Batman films are excellent.

And just as an aside, not that this one really bothers me, but poor Patrick Swayze, they are remaking dirty dancing as well.

Re: Films that should never be remade

They did do a sequel to high lander, highlander 2 .... they are killing it if they do actually remake it .

I hope to god they dont remake star wars (would this ever happen ) and maybe platoon, and in general its stupid as it shows they are out of ideas and annoys me when its unoriginal. The nolan batman films are excellent but those arent remakes as such... its just better .

Re: Films that should never be remade

i dont mind if they remake the first 3 and remove the tall crap actor... ruined it for me and the little kid in the first one, would be pretty good without them 2! However the original trilogy should be kept untouched even if Lucas thinks his changes are "improvements" its still better than being remade, wish hed release the original original ones though.

Re: Films that should never be remade

I'm pretty confident highlander has about 5 sequels currently lol.

Its all about the money though, people recognize the name so go and see it, as mentioned the only decent remake I've seen is batman everything else has been tripe.

The new one is a prequel, not remake.

Apart from the fact they are not all Norwegians and it will not be subtitled im still going to see it (but expecting they will not be able to capture the atmosphere/paranoia of Carpenters remake)

The Goonies. Part of me would cease to exist if I saw anything but the original version.

Although I think it should be pretty safe. The current trend is to reboot everything and make it more 'gritty' than before and I can't see the Goonies lending itself!

Worryingly, I can image some movie exec deciding it was time to make a 'dark and gritty' Ghostbusters movie.

    I really really dislike remakes/reboots.

To me, it just says "the people making this movie lack sufficient skill to write something new and/or to continue to develop or explore characters someone else wrote".
