Ip Man - the best Kung Fu movie I've seen

Well,,, I admit to thinking it was Internet Protocol Man when I saw it listed.....

but it's not that... oh no.... not at all.

Ip Man is about Bruce Lee's mentor, before Bruce was on the scene.

Rural China invaded by the Japanese in war time.

Ip Man, a local Wing Chun martial arts intstructor, so good as to be dazzling. Everyone loves him, all the locals...but not the bad guys. Nope

A few predictable scenes... bad guys come to town etc... all well worth having on this genre of film. Some mild comedy fight scenes... well worth a cold beer to celebrate victory...
    and then...

nasty story unfolds... I won't spoil it, but evil Japanese invaders, with their own martial arts as a hobby too.... no food, drudgery of life, oppression, hero needed.....

    and it's just 100% fine.

It's so adictive as to be worthy of wearing out the rewind button on the remote... it is screen glue material

I've just bought IP Man 2 on Blu ray for a next installment.

this film is superb and you just MUST see it.

    For what it's worth
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1220719/ give it 8,1

    Frankly... I see it as a 9/10

    GOLD

Yes, both good films, shame they are ruined a bit by the wirework but still..

Interesting to see how they got the boxing vs "chinese" arts thing in the second one and how it changed how people boxed, interesting story..

Was thinking of getting the 2nd before I found out it hadn't been released in the UK!

So where did you pickup your copy from? Good price?

    Thanks.

got them both for under a tenner iirc, probably from Amazon or Play (not using play anymore tho). 2 is good, but not as good as 1, wire tricks in 2nd are far too obvious and ruin it a bit.

    Awesome films tho

Re: Ip Man - the best Kung Fu movie I've seen

I love the first one, and it feels very 'authentic' to all the other decent chinese films I have seen, but the second one came short for me. I wont go into details for those waiting to see it, but the first half I thought was brilliant, but the whole boxing thing ruined it for me.

They seemed to pick the worst english speaking actors for the western parts, and it just ruins the feel of it for me. Production values are still high, and the choreography is still amazing, but for me the second half of the film seemed off.

But obviously still worth a watch!!!

Re: Ip Man - the best Kung Fu movie I've seen

just to add, both are very good movies Donnie Yen is seriously kicking ass with his career.

You might want to check out a lesser well known film. Try googling 'Saat Po Long'

Re: Ip Man - the best Kung Fu movie I've seen

I liked the first Ip Man more, the war setting seemed to have made it more epic.

Anyways, what made me like it was the fight scenes especially how skillful Donnie Yen is.

Loved Ip Man, absolutely great film and he was truly one of the greats. I could watch those films over and over and over again. Especially the end when a so called Mr Lee appears! lol classic

I thought of the IP man films I've seen (1 & 2) they were both well done and inspiring.

That was a little cheesy, but brought a smile to my face, incorrect because Bruce became Bruce Lee when he came over to the US. But nevertheless the films were good. I love a good martial arts film I do.
