One other to add to the mix:
Leverage - an american version of Hustle, but very enjoyable! Always lots of good twists!
Funland. Stunning writing/story and acting. You must have an appreciation for dark humour though... sometimes very dark.
Me and the O/H have been watching seasons 1-4 of The Big Bang Theory,
Quite possibly my favourite show now.
Farscape is a great series which is often forgotten.
Breaking Bad. Watched all 4 seasons back to back. So damn good.
Big Bang Theory as rover214 mentioned is a good laugh
I'm also a fan of american sitcom stuff;
Seinfeld,
Everybody Loves Raymond,
King Of Queens,
Frasier,
Two and a half men.
Quite like M*A*S*H also
Could probably name another 20 or so I like but i'll leave it at this list
Carnivale
Supernatural
Heroes
Game of Thrones
Lexx
The Walking dead
Wonderfalls
last 2 seasons of Smallville
Back in the day
Dallas hehe
Mash
Dr Who - not new crap
transformers
red dwarf
twin peaks !!
black books

Babylon 5 is a must see if you like Sci Fi. Amazon were doing the complete boxset mid last year for around £50 and its worth every penny. My set has the smaller cases, with every series, all the movies and also the Crusade series which was a spin off.
Burn Notice is another excellent series, been watching it on FX lately, wish I had tuned in earlier. About a spy that basically gets ditched by the government and left to fend for himself. So he teams up with Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead fame) and starts working to set things right for random people and trying to find out why he got burned. Its absolutely brilliant.
Walking Dead is another phenominal series. Zombies, drama & action all tied in together. Currently Season 1 is available as Season 2 is due back on the air in about February this year. This is a must see for anyone, it works so well on so many levels. Cant wait for it returning, it has been so good watching this series. My wife doesnt like gore or horror and she is even hooked by it. We were gutted when they said 3 month break till back half of season 2.
Red Dwarf, yeah you will have probably seen them so many times in the past. Always good to stick on and just watch again though. Never gets tired or wears thin. You can get the 8 series as double & triple disc sets or there is a boxset available called just the shows which doesnt have any of the extras.
King of the Hill, great animation from the creators of Beavis & Buthead. Literally about family life in a small fictional town in Texas. Its a great show which me and my wife love, been watching it again over the past week. There were 6 Seasons of the show in total, only problem is that Season 6 isnt available on Region 2 DVD. Going to just buy it on Region 1 at somepoint. Other 5 Seasons though are readily available.
M*A*S*H - Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. Classic anti war comedy, 11 seasons all told and not 1 bad episode in the lot. Its warm, harsh and extremely funny. My wife bought me the full boxset 2 years ago and we have watched all 11 seasons 3 times now, its just so damned good. Only thing that gets me watching it now though is Harry Morgan died a few weeks back, the guy who plays Col Sherman T Potter.
3rd Rock fron the Sun, John Lithgow does comedy so well. 6 seasons available pretty cheap now, loads of episodes. Its comedy gold and well worth grabbing as its one that you will always go back to.
X Files & Millenium. Both from the minds of Chris Carter, there are only 3 seasons of Millenium, unfortunately it got cancelled before its time. Its a lot darker than X Files and Lance Henrikson plays a great lead role. Each set it pretty cheap now and worth picking up, this series renewed my love of X Files. There are 9 seasons of X Files, some of the episodes are hit and miss but overall it was a great series.
Boardwalk Empire, set during prohibition. Steve Buscemi plays a suave gangster basically building his empire from scratch offering what the people want. Very gritty but absolutely fantastic. If you liked The Untouchables and Public Enemies movies then you will like this series.
Finally I will end on 2 more as I could go on all day
Band of Brothers and The Pacific. You can get both of these pretty cheap now, I only paid £16 for Band of Brothers on Bluray and it has the Metal Box, I got Pacific which is boxed in the same way for my birthday last year, think it was around £20 on Bluray. They have a long story connecting all the episodes but you can watch single episodes. If you go for Band of Brothers one of the last episodes where they find a concentration camp, its heart breaking but grips you. Absolutely amazing series.
+1.
"Why We Fight" (ep 9).
Heart-rending stuff.
Band Of Brothers is probably better than Saving Private Ryan due to having more time to develop characters and storylines, although they share alot in terms of theme / production / values etc.
This was one of those shows that I wanted other people to watch once i'd finished, and for months talked about it keen to persuade anyone.
- Another poster, from another forum.I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.
System as shown, plus: Microsoft Wireless mobile 4000 mouse and Logitech Illuminated keyboard.
Sennheiser RS160 wireless headphones. Creative Gigaworks T40 SII. My wife. My Hexus Trust
I noticed that Battlestar Galactica was by far the most mentioned in this thread, so I went out and bought the Blu-Ray Boxset for £29.99, which I thought was stupidly cheap.
Gonna start giving them a watch after I've made some dinner and maybe see if I can find a good deal on Lost.. I purposely avoided them on TV so that I could watch them all together in one boxset once they were done.
There really was far too many suggestions to choose from in here
I can't believe no-one suggested Family Guy or South Park
BSG started off great and then got more and more annoying towards the end. The ending is meh!
I would say get Firefly and Serenity. Everyone I know who has watched it really enjoyed it.
Babylon 5 is good from the end of season 1 to the end of season 4 with season 5 having some decent episodes at the end.
Farscape as I mentioned before is a great series and know people who are not that much into sci-fi liking it. Of course I am quite surprised no one has mentioned Stargate SG1 or Atlantis which are quite fun to watch according to many people.
Regarding a war series,Das Boot is definitely worth watching.
If you want to watch something a bit different then what about an anime?? Cowboy Bebop is highly rated as is Ghost in the Shell. These are regarded as among the best anime in the last 15 years.
