Patronising political correctness; all groups that explored entity didn't return, only a group consisting of a sexually and ethnically diverse women can possibly succeed and save humans.
Fight Club was a good film (best to ignore the hype and see films anyway), about male identity(without all the cliches, unlike Annihilation)!.
Annihilation and its sequels were excellent novels (IMO) but apparently there were a lot of changes made for the big screen. Books had a very creepy, otherworldly vibe that stood out for me. AFAICR There was a reason the first group was male only and the second female but can't remember why, but pretty certain it wasn't anything to do with "PC gone mad" as you infer...
'Fight Club' is certainly a more complex piece that to me is about modern (especially white) males' perceived emasculation and the paranoid neuroses it engenders.

Oh yes it's all subjective interpretation. Obviously if you've read the books you have your own perspective. I was just judging it as stand alone film. I don't have any problem with female heroes(or feminism). It's just my reaction to the perception of forced politics(identity in this case) which is trend mainly based on marketing. Wonder Woman worked because it didn't seem contrived.
(Annihilation)> Making women the gun happy, shoot it or blow it up protagonists isn't really a step forward(ie: their simplistic feminism just means replacing male characters with female ones). In reality to that plot, they'd have found a tech/biological solution, or just nuked it.
There are just too many films regurgitating the same cliches. Big budget non sense.
Watched Drive last night. Great acting by Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling. I enjoy a film that still has me thinking about it, the next day. There's a moment when Gosling's character becomes almost animalistic/tribal, which reminds me of some of the fight scenes in FC. I think modern male identity is layered over earlier identities. Fight Club is about delving down and allowing those identities to exist in a very conformist society, rather than just the socially constructed outer layer(buying IKEA!).
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
I watched Bladerunner - The Final Cut at the weekend. It's been that long since I originally saw it, I'd forgotten most of it. TBF the one I saw originally was the one with the narration
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?

Don't think I've heard of that one, what's the synopsis?
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
Imagine an alternate universe where Hollywood wasn't obsessed by profit and treating film goers like retards.
This is for sci fi geeks>, Jodorovsky's Dune. The Chilean auteur(Alejandro Jodorovsky) created a vision of Dune (before the Lynch version). He combined the drawings of Moebius, Chris Foss, and H.R. Giger. He had Pink Floyd for the sound track/music, and a floating Orson Welles. Although his film was never made, the ideas and images became part of the lexicon of many sci fi films.

I've finally got round to watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was as good as I was hoping it would be! Still got the other two new ones to watch at some point in the future now.....

Yeah, but THIS:

Worth it...
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
I watched Sicario last night(again a reference from WD2). Emily Blunt plays an ethical law abiding cop who fails to grasp the mentality of the Juarez cartels.
With Sci Fi I like it when they examine the psychological effects; from Tarkovsky's Solaris, 2001 to Moon(with a creepy Kevin Spacey robot) and Melancholia.

The Lady in the Van (2015)
I really enjoyed it. Based on a "mostly true" story, Miss Shepherd lives in an old Bedford van progressing from unwelcome parking space to unwelcome parking space in the well-to-do Gloucester Crescent in Camden.
8/10
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
As reboots go this one was ok.
It was both familiar and fresh at the same time, comedic value was good too although some of it is not for kids ears.
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
Blade Runner 2049: I think I enjoyed it more that the 1st one, I don't know if Ryan Gosling was acting or if that's just how he is, but he was perfect for the role. Picture quality was reference in 4k... 9/10
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
It seems an acting technique many aspire to is that of Clint Eastwood, maybe Gosling is one of them. I think there's a sort of inner tension and a calm exterior.
I enjoyed BR 2049, but it was hard for it to make the impact of the original, mainly in terms of cinematography, ideas about the future of AI, and the music. Although the basic story is film noir detective story, transplanted into the future.
Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?
Ready player one over the weekend. Good film. Liked the throwbacks to other films and shows they used.

I think it's difficult to have the same impact as an original, but having watched both recently on UHD BR, the advances in cameras and presentation tech favour the newer film. It's got more 'wow' in the presentation. I guess the original had the same wow when it was first released, with it's vision of the world (set next year BTW, if we don't get flying cars by then, I'm going to be mad vex.), but the newer one is just cleaner and more detailed. Whereas the 4k/HDR treatment highlights the film grain in the original (some people like it), the newer one just 'pops' with the highlights. Both have their place, I think.
