    Re: Favourite Comics / Graphics Novels ?

    I finished Alan Moore's "From Hell" the other day. I had put it off because I've not really been a fan of Eddie Campbell's art in the past and I had heard how dark it was in this book. However, being an Alan Moore fan I had to eventually succumb and pick it up.

    It was a really great read, and the collected paperback is quite cheap considering it's freakin' huge. It was very dark though, being based on Jack The Ripper it obviously can't change the fact that those horrible murders happened. Making it quite difficult to read.

    Really loving the Boys atm. The fact that there is a character based on Simon pegg within it just makes it even better.

    Ongoing wise the Scott Snyders Batman has been awesome especially the death of the family arc has seen the joker being really dark and deranged!

    Crossed badland keeps getting more warped!

    Hack/Slash was great and the ending was good. Its supposed to be done for good... or at least until Tim decided to resurect it

    Neil gaiman's sandman series, every time. Aside from the odd hiccup where he tried to link it to the (i think) DC superheroes, a fantastic series.

    Some artists are better than others throughout the series (amongst my favourite artwork, and story, are in "seasons of mists") but rarely a foot wrong throughout

    Yes of course Watchmen is a wonderful graphic novel that every comic reader should read. Check out Halo, the Original graphic novel. It'll be one heck of a ride.

    Just read this. Gaiman was forced to link The Sandman into the DC universe by his gimp editors. Even in the last book we saw Superman and Batman. Can you really see Gaiman wanting to insert those dull, dull, dull two dimensional Murican characters into his stories?

    Another vote for Locke and Key and Preacher.
    Also don't be afraid to check for any graphic novels based on any films you've enjoyed. I've had some good enjoyment from Aliens vs Predator compendiums. The crossover films were not great but the individual Predator and Alien films have had some gems that made me consider reading them.

    I know what you mean with this:. I 'got' this series in the early 90s when I briefly flirted with graphic novels in a way I couldn't with any others. However the artwork after a couple of series suffered and the dialogoue became predictable. Death became cliche. Classic case of end the series sooner rather than later. And that in a graphic novel the person doing the drawing is VERY important. Changing it to cartoony style stuff later killed it. The original artist (Keane?) was more important than Gaiman.

    Re: Favourite Comics / Graphics Novels ?

    That's complete nonsense. There was no single artist over the entire series of Sandman though some drew more scripts than others. I think you're referring to Dave McKean who designed all the covers but had little if anything to do with the interior art. How you can say that the art is more important than the script is beyond me. That's style over substance... And "cartoony style"?!? Where?!?

    Petrefax - Gaiman apparently didn't want to associate Sandman with the DC Universe but was overruled. The only ones that ever worked were the stories with John Constantine and Doctor Destiny in the first collection. Thankfully the DC Universe was then ignored right until the very last story.

    Re: Favourite Comics / Graphics Novels ?

    I tend to read a lot of Graphic Novels. used to collect them weekly in single issues then space became an issue and I moved to digital/Graphic Novels.

    My main stay that I still get weekly/monthly is 2000AD the prog and the meg.

    Graphic Novel wise this month I have read:

    * Seconds (By the creator of Scott Pilgrim)
    * Filler Bunny, Squee, Johnny The Homocidal Maniac (Most people will know the created for his Invader Zim cartoon)
    * All 12 Volumes of Transmetropolitan
    * Black Metal 1 - 3
    * TMNT Vols 1 - 6
    * Black Hole
    * Hip Hop Family Tree Vol 1
    * The Aueteur (Weird and twisted this one)
    * Dial H Vol 1 and 2 (Got cancelled so only two vols to collect, by Chine Meiville, very good author)
    * Monster - Perfect Monster vol 1 (recollected and re-issued as original manga run was out of print)

    That's this month but I think I must have over 600 Graphic Novels, About 300 Manga Volumes and then the last 12 years of 2000AD etc.

    Plenty reading to be had and then there are all the local small press comic guys and girls who put out small run small press comics in the local Travellingman in Newcastle.

    When I was younger I would pretty much read the usual super hero stuff and then I moved away to more interesting subjects and grittier stories. Tbh once you have read spiderman, ironman, batman, green lantern etc and they reboot them, 80% of the time is the same story retold with a new writers twist or additions to them. Don't get me wrong I will pick up the odd one here and there if its recommended but I tend to stick to the more indie stuff these days.

    I think one day I will have to make a list of all the Graphic Novels and Manga books I have so I can keep tabs on what I have.

    My mother has just sold her house and was going through the loft and there are another 12 long boxes up there with full Spawn Runs, first print Th Tick etc etc, There are signed ones by Stan Lee etc, probably worth a few bob but with the Tick, I don't think I could ever sell them, there is also the full Sin City volumes up in that loft all first prints too, going to grab them all at the weekend hopefully and sort through them.

    I don't know if anyone has posted it but, joe the barbarian was pretty great as singles. I gave a lot of mine to my nephew a while ago when I cleared out, but the ones I kept, in no particular order:
    Dark Knight Rises/Strikes Again
    Gotham By Gaslight
    Long Halloween, Dark Victory
    Superman For all Seasons

    And if Batman/Superman's not your bag, Ex Machina (certainly the first few) are excellent.

    Re: Favourite Comics / Graphics Novels ?

    Necroing an old thread as my 9 year old has just discovered Asterix, which lead me to rediscover graphic novels via the Walking Dead compendiums.

    Any more suggestions?
