Family viewing. I love watching it with my kids. It sounds like you haven't even watched it properly.

Maybe I need to enjoy it through the medium of kids?
No, it isn't time to cancel, but I do believe they need to rethink things. I'm not a fan of the short format, especially in the most recent series, because they spend so long building the story (they do it well, I might add) in each episode that they almost run out of time - the end always seems rushed. I joked recently that it was the sci-fi equivalent of Columbo.
I have no problems with Matt Smith as the Doctor - his first two series were stellar, in my opinion - but the writing has definitely suffered of late, and may even be why Smith is leaving.
I was a child of the seventies, so Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker in particular had a profound impact. Honestly though, I'd take Christopher Ecclestone over any of them, followed by Tennant - old doesn't always mean better. I didn't choose Ecclestone because he was part of it's re-emergence either, I genuinely think he was excellent in the role.
Unlike Kev, I won't hide behind my kids as my reason to watch it - I will simply admit to being a long time fan.
lol
OK Dave, I admit I love watching it too and have introduced my 4 year old son to it. We are currently going through the new versions series one to five on Virgin's TV on demand.
I bought him a sonic screwdriver on Sunday, and he keeps waving it at the TV every time the Doctor uses his. Makes me laugh![]()
That's time travel for you!
To be honest I have not particularly enjoyed the last series, and this isn't thanks to matt smith, who I think has done a wonderful job after taking over from his predecessor. Thin plots, overusing creatures and generally being far far too preachy has not helped, but the international franchise and DVD sales will mean that the BBC will not cancel this cash cow. Personally I would like them to make it more "mature" and played later on, especially with the attempted kid tv spin offs.
I don't think it's a problem with the targeted audience age. Season 5 was great and worked for both kids and adults.
The problem is that it has become a show that thinks it doesn't need a plot. They think the audience is happy just to see the doctor in odd situations.
Let's put the doctor on a pirate ship, let's put the doctor in the wild west, let's get the doctor to meet various historical figures..
I didn't think the Van Gogh one was too bad, because he isn't really known as a historical character, but Churchill, Hitler, Nixon, etc. are too obvious and have been done too many times before.
I wasn't a fan of Matt Smith to start of with, but he did quite a good job with what he was given.
I think the thing that most people forget is when Matt Smith came in, David Moffet had bowed out, and the new writers have not been anywhere near as good. As people have pointed out they should be having more multi-episode stories and the whole thing with the "special" companions is getting old now! It was a nice twist in the first series, but that is when it should have ended.
I don't mind the continued "special" companions, after all this is something that does link episodes together.
Yes I'm in two minds about these 'special companions'. Good at first but sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.
