Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
Now, don't get me wrong, I love R Heinlein's books, esp Starship Troopers, I think it is a really superb anti war story. But no so the movies, instead, the original film seemed to miss the point completely, and glorify war. The second film was just an adaptation of the original characters with a poor plot and not very well done,
BUT this third film is nothing short of dreadful. Saw it on TV last night, first time viewing.
The acting is so false & planky, especially Blalock (which is a surprise considering her ST appearances), and the God/Religion aspect was just .... just .... dammit I cant think of a word bad enough.
The ott gung-ho attitude is still there in droves, and once more Verhoeven misses the point entirely.
The book simply shows that war is completely pointless and there are no winners.
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
This was an Edward Neumeier mess. Verhoeven had naff-all to do with this one... which is probably why we got the Mechs in this one!
The original worked on many levels for what it intended, but since it was satirising the book to begin with, that's not exactly a massive achievement either.
I think perhaps your expectations were too high in the first place, though... ;)

Never seen ST2 or 3 or read the books but loved the original film as it satirized US foreign policy, political hawks and to some extent war and aggression in general. However now that you've told me it's got the hotness that is Blalock in it I may have to find a copy. As for her wooden acting, well I guess playing a repressed Vulcan in ST-E stood her in good stead. :)

Blalock has seem to have got new bee-stung lips in the film though.

Damn! The swelling in her lips will kill the swelling in my loins!:naughty::surprised::puke::wallbash::mad:
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
The first movie was probably nothing to do with the book, but as a satire, I thought it was pretty good. I thought it was basically what would happen if Earth was ruled by a Military dictatorship, where anyone who doesn't serve in the military is considered a citizen. I don't personally think it was gloryfying war, but more like a propoganda film that this type of government would release. I haven't read the book, so based on just the movie, I have to wonder if it was the humans who started the war, and the bugs are just defending themselves...
ST3 on the other hand, was an awful movie. Acting was bad, story was bad. And I don't think it was a satire about anything. I felt bad having to sit through that movie.
and darn it, I've got that "It's a good day to die" song that the Skymarshall sings in my head now!:help:
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
Ahhhh, I just double checked IMDB cuz I knew I saw Vanhoevens name in the credits but it was just "special thanks" I misread it :)
Please read the book tho :)
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
Still think 2 is worse than 3 (they are both terrible).

The Forever War is a good response to it too,and worth a read.

I haven't read it in.... well, decades. I do, however, have it on the shelf at home, so will drag it out at some point.
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
I really enjoyed the original ST movie, and thought it would've made a great RTS game. I can't forget the horror that was the 2nd movie, and if the 3rd is only a little better / as bad / worse (*shivers*), then I will save my 2 hours watching something else..
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
The first film is very fun... but I still prefer Aliens, really! :D
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
It is difficult to think of a good book that turned into a good movie.
My wife loves Ender's Game, so we haven't seen the film yet on the simple expectation that they will have trashed it.
I Robot is still one of the worst for me.
At least they gave up after the first Golden Compass.
Re: Starship Troopers 3 - Marauder
Enders Game film wasnt actually too bad IMHO :)

You are the second person to have said that to me. Hmm, sounds like it might be worth at least risking on budget DVD :)
I confess I haven't read the book, maybe after I finish the Stainless Steel Rat series.
