Recommend me a ghost/spooky/wintry book (might be a tall order)
Got the idea that I'd like to put an mp3 of a suitably wintry supernatural or ghostly story onto a usb drive as a small xmas present, but am failing to find something that fits the bill. I've been round in circles on amazon looking at people who read this also read this & drawing a blank; either unsuitable, or terrible reviews.
What I'm after is something that sits between too ghost/horror classic M R James, and too fantasy witches/werewolves. So just nicely spooky. A bit Susan Hill I suppose but not exactly. Maybe a touch of Mort.. or Dickens' Signalman-ish, even. If any of you know the Pilgrim series by Sebastian Baczkiewicz, that sort of tone, rather than the Audrey Niffenegger type of thing. Can be modern day setting or with time shift elements.. something with woods, water, rather than haunted houses & mad monks, but not too far towards fairies & unicorns. And the newer the better to rule out duplicating.
Anyway if you happen to just be in the middle of the very thing, shout up. Ta. :)

more modern stuff, not a clue. all my horrory books are on the shelf gathering more dust, not had time to read them since my dad got them in £1 box lots from nearby auctions. so cant recommend any atall.

Thanks, I'm checking out now. Couple of less-well known possibles there; 'The Willows' I've heard myself on R4 and forgotten about, that falls within the kind of thing.. and that's taken me off-campus & found The Man Whom The Trees Loved.. so yep, woods & water.. :) will poke about among the others. Cheers.

The Graveyard Book is the only thing I've recently read that comes to mind, however its not horror - just contains the undead :)

Actually most of Neil Gaiman's stuff is good. Anansi Boys etc.

I'm not a big reader, but I really enjoyed this, nice and easy to read and very captivating. It's written as diary entries and it's superbly spooky and bleak.

Thanks all. :) Anything Neil Gaiman, I think it would be too much of a 99% chance they'd got it/heard it, unfortunately. Dark Matter I did go past in my wanderings, I did like the sound of it & the tone but wasn't totally sold on the setting, but actually I might put it back on the shortlist; people seem to rate it well in the main.
