Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
**This thread should be for discussion regarding aired episodes only. Not spoilers or book spoilers please. **
Well episode 1 is over. What did people think? I haven't read the books so I don't know what else is going to happen etc.
Overall I thought it was good but it had quite a sluggish pace. not much happened. Just lots of recaps etc.
Looking forward to the rest though.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Yeah, it was a bit sluggish, much more so than other first episodes.
Perhaps they are expecting a lot of first time viewers who need to catch up.
I imagine things will heat up pretty quickly.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
I have read the books so I guess that means I need to be quiet ;)
I will say though that towards the end of Season 4 were a few of the first instances of the continuity moving away from the books drastically. So I'll be interested to see if they pull things back a little over the coming episodes or if they change more to compensate for the changes they've made already.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
I am aware that the Bran story and perhaps littlefinger story are now beyond the books?
I just want some action! Here's what I hope/imagine:
Lord of the rings return of the king style battle with:
Dragons, Khalessi, Stannis and golden army, white walker army, wildling army with giants (headed by jon snow) and kings landing armies united all in one HUGE mash (topped off with Bran flying the black crazy dragon :P ).
Am I close?! Please tell em I'm close lol!
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
in addition to what neonplanet40 said, what I'm hoping will happen is bran does his weird mind-meld possession stuff on hodor and in the final showdown fight, in a big epic 'there can be only one' Riddick style 'you take what you reap' mega fight, hodor does the knock out punch on drogon, and seen as it was technically hodor who killed the last contender, then hodor becomes king by default.
but I am expecting (not read the books, so only guessing) a big fiery battle between that fire witch lady and khalessi. where they burn down an entire city fighting each other, then realise they are both fire proof, they just look at each other and smirk, khalessi then realises her clothes weren't fire proof and its a bit draughty ;)
I expect it felt sluggish and not much action in the first episode because they were setting up the storylines for the rest of the series.

I haven't read that far, but I believe you are right with Bran and thus there won't be any/much Bran to allow the books to catch up.
We've already seen Littlefinger and I imagine we will see a lot more in season 5.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Jamie Lannister isn't where he should be right now either if I remember rightly. I need to recap the end of season four and book five to be honest as it's been a couple of years since I read them now.
I'll try to be nice, not spoil anything and tell you what I THINK will happen soon, based on what I've read - Word of the dragons will start making its way to Westeros and those in power will stop treating them and Daeny as a rumour/dirty secret, leading to something of an arms race and stopping some of the war for the throne itself.
Stannis, the watch, the wildlings and what remains of the northmen not under the Boltons boot heel will join forces. Probably at around the same time people in Dorne start to get involved, although what they have planned will remain something of a mystery.
The people of the iron islands have their own plan and won't ally themselves with anyone, they think they know something everyone else doesn't right now, however I think that may come back to bite them in the ass.
Several parties will then march on kings landing at once under the impression they have the rightful claim to the throne and a strong enough force behind them, the white walkers will then make EVERYONE rethink their priorities and the dragons everyone's scared of will come into their own and defeat the walkers, leaving whoever remains to make a grab for power.
So yeah, I think you're close, I think there's almost certainly an epic battle involving several of those armies afoot. How it plays out though and who lives and dies will be a mystery though. We all know George R.R Martin isn't shy of killing people you love off without a second thought ;)
*edit* By the way, if you think any of this constitutes spoilers (I've omitted names and events and just hypothesised but even so) shout up and I'll delete them :) */edit*

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Nice to see it return and part of me wants to download the leaked episodes but I must refrain from spoiling it by watching low bit-rate videos!
I don't think the neighbours were happy Monday evening when the title music started pounding-out :) But it was much what I expected for the first episode of a new series, pretty much re-capping what happened at the end of the last season, plus the one big event right at the end of the episode.

It's not just the low quality and the moral argument, but also the excruciatingly long wait between watching episode 4 and being able to watch episode 5!
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Does anyone know at what point they're up to currently for this season?
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Well well, after a few weeks of build up things are really happening now!
The last 2 weeks episodes have really got me going......shame the season is going to be over when it seems to have only just started :(
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
I'm struggling to get into this season as much, maybe it's just watching it once a week. When stories line don't develop for a couple of episodes then come back into the forefront I've lost track/interest in what's going on.
Also, I know it's got nudity and scenes of a sexual nature, but the jail scene seemed a bit unnecessary and cheapened the character.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
I too have found this season to be quite lackluster. Too much happening but characters not getting enough screen time to develop their stories. The scene in bravos etc was very rushed.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Episode 8 certainly wakes things up.... cant wait for the next 2.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
This and the previous season I have felt (wife has said also) that it feels like filler and setting a scene.
Monday night episode started interesting with the meeting with Tyrian, then it dropped off until the stuff with the watch.
Scenes with Cercei in the cell were overly dark, I had to turn the brightness up on the TV, same goes for meeting John Snow was in with the Wildlings, the whole Winter battle scene at the end again was overly dark.
Last season the high point for me was anything involving The Watch, the episode near the end fighting off Wildlings was EPIC and certainly a season high point!!
Interesting seeing John take out a White Walker with his sword after discovering the Dragon Glass wasn't there. Hopefully next week there will be more on The Watch.
I am also hoping that Dog is still alive somehow after being left
There was also talk of Catelyn Stark making her reappearance this season, if so I am getting the impression that it is going to be right at the end of the last episode.

Yeah, same here - I was the verge of binning the whole thing, but this episode was very good.

Dany's story was going stale too, but I'm quite enthused by the idea of Tyrion being her advisor.

No issues here - it was perfectly watchable.

They were fighting the white walkers, not wildlings, but it was great to watch nonetheless.
The annoying thing is that we've been waiting for a season and a half for things to get exciting, and now there's only two episodes left before another lengthy break.

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
The actress playing Caitlyn has said she's not returning but not sure how true that is. They've completely missed out the Brotherhood without Banners storyline which I think is a pity. With them, the Sparrows and Dany all sort of competing for the hearts and minds of the 'commoner' I think it makes an interesting aside into the politics of post-feudalism, if that makes sense. It's those themes (yes, including the treatment of women, slaves, the poor etc) that don't get a look in with 'conventional' fantasy that sets GoT apart for me. But I also like giants, dragons and zombie bashing of course :)
-
Well that escalated quickly
Wow, what an ultimate episode for this series. Not sure it 'broke the internet' (maybe it was more shocking for non-readers) but I found it pretty satisfying in a horrible way.
And now we've caught up (or overtaken) the books, the next season will be new for everyone (I'm assuming GRRiM still won't have finished the next novel by then LOL)... :surprised:
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Keeping the body count high on main characters aren't they! Enjoyable, certainly wouldn't have chosen those results and that's why it's a hit. I guess where there's no longer a character the story will just drop off at that location, should mean they can focus on fewer areas allowing them to develop at a speedier rate.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Ruined the whole series now. Just why. It wasn't even effective, just annoying and didn't have the same effect as similar occurrences.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
There's a lot of discussion over that death, whether that person will be back in the next season. As GRRM said, "If there’s one thing we know in A Song of Ice and Fire is that death is not necessarily permanent."
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
After seeing 5-10 I'm wondering who is going to be left at the end.

They have already stated that they had to remove that entire story arc.
As for the last episode of the series.....the fact the death happened wasn't a shock (it's not like he was Mr Popular there) but the fact the death came right at the end of the episode without leaving a major cliffhanger was a bit of a shock.
I think the imp will be the last man standing, his character just keeps getting better and I think there would be a mutiny if they killed him off.

Damn, that was one of my favourites! It was also important IMO in tying in Mel and Thoros as the Lord of Light's priests, able to resurrect the dead (re: Beric, and Lady Stoneheart, and therefore possibly Jon Snurrr). And as I mentioned earlier, it sort of gave another perspective, that of the common folk as compared to the lords strutting about carelessly like the 1%ers they are.
As for the other view of the poor majority populace, the rise of the Faith Militant wasn't covered as well as in the books: it appeared to have come from nowhere on screen and suddenly holds power over all King's Landing (including the soldiers of both Lannisters and Tyrells apparently)...
Still not convinced Stannis the menace is dead, GoT has never shied away from showing gruesome endings but his was a cut to black, very unusual - and that quick edit from Brienne to Ramsey was strange too, not one I remember previously seeing used in this series. I'm almost certain someone hit Brienne from behind just before she struck Stannis....
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
did anyone clean up all the mess after that big fight at the wall at end of season 4? how about Baratheons lot? I doubt that 'bloke from misfits' knows they can get back up again. he may have another fisticuffs on his hand.
I also hope that the wall defenders have no respect for their traitorous dead, just dumping their bodies into a pit with no cremation, and that when the walkers come down BOOM mega dead army with a Snowy new general ;)
ginger free-folk lady and jon snurr could be re-united again.
can you get white-giant-walkers? or white-direwolf-walkers? white-dragon-walkers?
simplest way of finding blondey-queen would've been to let the other two dragons out to play, then follow them. thinking of which, who'll feed them now? or will they just starve/hibernate in that dungeon until needed again?
hope its not to cryptic for you. :p
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
The ginger girl I think Jon cremated, and they definitely know about having to do that because of a zombie in Castle Black earlier on (can't remember which season)....
The White Walkers are the 'generals' I believe, they just raise the dead to fight for them; we know they ride undead horses so I'm sure all animals are fair game for resurrection in that case :surprised:

Gwendoline Christie was on Thronecast afterwards and she went to great lengths to point out that Stannis was definitely dead, and she definitely killed him. Then again, you never know...

How exactly do you follow a dragon flying at full speed ?
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
I've been somewhat disappointed by this season. It departed way too much from the books. I'm also considering not watching the next seasons as they will be one big spoiler fest for the unreleased books.

I did have something in mind when I typed that, but I cant remember what It was.
something about - it was a day or 2 before they set of to look for her on horses, they wern't quite sure what way it was, the dragons would've had to stop every so often due to feeding and getting cramps from not much exercise. they could follow the trail of dead burnt stuff from the 2 feeding dragons. drogo wouldn't have needed to eat much, hes been free and wild for a while and stocked up on food s wouldnt have left much of a followable trail.
I don't know anymore. I wasn't expecting follow up questions :p

Yup. first 3 seasons were great...turning stannis evil and killing sno just after his WW heroics sucked.

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Ah well Snow might come back yet if rumors are to be believed. But yeah, I'm a bit disenchanted with Thrones now too. Last season already had some hiccups and this season was just awful with the exception of Hardhome.

Agreed. Hardhome was a real high but the rest seemed very rushed, could've done with some slow exposition episodes - think 10 a season is too few (Lost had 24)! Suspect that's purely down to finances though...
At least it's caught up with the books so everyone is equalling in the dark

Certainly don't agree that it was a snooze fest, especially compared to episode 1 but I do agree about the level of impact if they'd left it longer and also the knee jerk reaction comment. However I read somewhere that GRRM had stated a long time ago that that character was one of the few central remaining ones so I suppose it was a fairly safe bet to foretell that turn of events, and the media hype may have just made it seem like a knee jerk reaction.
Eitherway certainly looking forward to next weeks installment to see where this goes.

I had to take a breath and man up at the end of the last episode, nearly got to me! Like I've said elsewhere the idea we've laughed at him for 5 years only for the tragedy of why he was that way to unfold now really give contrast to the scene. Superbly acted and shot and the musical score was incredible as always.
It know it's a good episode when you're still thinking about it the next day...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Episode 5 was absolutely beautiful. Describing what happened to a friend and I don't think the acting/writing/directing could have been done any better at all.

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
Call me shallow but I was disappointed that I was denied another Walk of Shame (I mean, Atonement) darn it!
Personally, this hasn't the Wow factor of the original season, as we now know what to expect. It comes across as more of a medieval soap-opera IMO but none the worse for that; still lots of interesting twists and turns, and odd actors popping out of the woodwork (wouldn't be surprised to see Samuel L. Jackson appear tbh)... ;-)
PS Is Jonathan Pryce the smuggest sparrow in Westeros? I still like what he's doing to the upper classes in King's Landing tho...

You are shallow. And so am I.
Last night's episode was a bit dull, and seemed to be over without much happening.

I'm shallow also. :)
However, thought last night's episode was a cracker! Can't wait for next week's now.

Probably because (as usual this season) they finish the show with an "OH!" moment. The rest of it was mediocre at best though.
The entire season has been, I guess that's the cost of forging on without the finished source material :(

Nope there were many great bit's in last night's show, if anything it was the ending that was little flat. Do agree about the season as a whole though which has been rather disjointed.

Maybe this is why I felt a bit meh about the whole episode, the ending was just like a wet fart.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
They have changed the format around a bit, Season 4 was little bits of each character, like 10 minutes of Arya, 10 minutes of Sansa, etc.
This season there is more focus on individuals in each episode. Like we spent a lot of time on some characters in individual episodes, but nothing on Tyrion for instance for 2 episodes?

I have all the books of game of thrones but I am still on book 1. I guess, it is better to watch than read.

I'll take 2/4, but what an episode!
Beautiful mirror in the Spoiler: In the Red Wedding, Robb is Shot with arrows, stabbed and his mother has her throat cut. The three principle architects are Tywin Lannister, Roose Bolton and Walder Frey who are, in order, shot with arrows, stabbed and have their throat cut. It could only have been better if Arya had been using Black Walder's face, as then each man would have been killed by their son, but I'll take Frey Pie.

Meh, hopefully the finale will improve on second watching but I was left somewhat disappointed, which kind of summarises the whole of Season 6.
*Edit* To be fair I was watching in less than ideal conditions as my 3yr old decided to join me in bed and watch his tablet. Which meant I couldn't hear certain bits and had to fast forward others in case he saw them. :)

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
OK on uninterrupted re-watch it was a much better experience and I'm revising my opinion of this episode. It was a a good 'un. :)......Unlike the rest of this season.
-
Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion (No Spoilers!)
IMHO even the worst episodes are better than most dross that gets transmitted but I'm biased because for some reason, I just can't get enough of GoT.... last time that happened was 'Lost' and 'Battlestar Galactice', both of which 'jumped the shark' in the final episode.
I'd still watch a new season of 'Lost' tho tbh :)
I wouldn't mind if GoT became an ongoing series soap-opera every week, taking us thru a reformation, revolution, industrialisation, the Space Race and into the future LOL
