    Music plundering for films/tv/games rant

    *contains churlishness & snobbery*

I know it's always gone on but lately every other time I spin a tune on good ol'youtube I scroll down the comments to find hordes of 'I came here from.. Gray's Anatomy, Teen Wolf, Madden (whatever that is), Bioshock, Fallout, blah blah blah..'

For one thing it makes you feel like you have pulpy soundtracky adverty taste in music (sometimes justly, sometimes unjustly), but mainly it's a trap for the unwary. The Ink Spots?! I mean, I can't hum the Ink Spots now without some pipsqueak thinks I know it from Fallout? Just shove off & stop it, everyone.

    Got to get creative!!

On topic, chances are some people only come across new music by other media. I do it a lot, my Google history is a lot of "So-and-So opening theme", but then I'll look through the rest of there music.

I also think that the 'younger generation' are more inclined to comment in there childishness. I'm pretty sure I've only ever commented on a couple youtube videos, and then only when they get a tiny amount of views to encourage them!

Re: Music plundering for films/tv/games rant

You can hardly blame young people for being young, can you?

Older folks such as myself had plenty of time to be exposed and develop our own music interests, I mean some of us even grew up listening to those songs on the radio and music channels.

New forms of media took over kids lives, choices are unlimited so it's normal for them to associate good songs they haven't heard before to the place they first heard it.

Is it annoying to see a Stones song constantly associated to COD? yes it is, but the mainstream releases that kids would be otherwise talking about wouldn't make it any better.

Within g8ina's thread there were questions re 'creativity' - peterb just stuck in my mind as putting the particular mockers on this.. though it was Saracen also, on checking back.

Oh can't I It isn't the comments themselves, in fact if kids are going to say (re the Ink Spots) this is great why don't they make music like this anymore - then that's no bad thing. It's the using of the music for x purpose in the first place - so that you have no idea a favourite track is now known as being 'off something or other' and you may be mistaken for a 'something or other' fan.

I used to keep hearing Depeche Mode on Eastenders, when they were in the caff. I got grumpy about it, then thought, 'meh, if it's bringing DM to more potential listeners, so much the better, and the guy choosing the music for the caff must be a fan'...

One of my favourite bands is UNKLE......I get the same when the great unwashed happen to be nearby while I am listening, they can't always put their finger on where they heard it and that sometimes makes it worse "Oh, it was the x advert, or was it?" or "I think it was on Masterchef"....

Grrr, let me listen to the music!

Well I hear your demi-rant and and am mindful of the words of Simon and Garfunkle, "I'd rather be a spanner than a snail".

Yes, well there's no answer to that. Except that I know very few of the words of S&G & all the happier for that, thus bringing us neatly from 'songs you wish others didn't know' to 'songs you're glad you missed'.
