Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
As per my thread on the Consumer Electronics area, I'm looking for a new telly, and that's got me thinking. I've had a look at the available 4k blu-rays, and most of them I've seen before, either on Blu-Ray or some other method, so which is worth buying to get the full 'Wow' from 4k? I'm steering towards a Star Trek or an X-Men...
Or which is available on streaming which has the same effect?

Well, on reading the reviews for Life of Pi, that is apparently the one to go for. Handily, I've read the book but not seen the film, so it'll be a new experience for me.

Are real 4K blurays available yet? I thought they were just 4K optimised but still 1080.

Do you mean the discs or the players?
If you mean discs, some are 2k upscaled to 4k, but some seem to be full 4k. I guess it depends what the original film was mastered in. Pretty similar to when Blu-Ray first came out...

I saw it in the Cinema. It was a work of art and thoroughly enjoyable. I can't tell you if it will showcase HDR though

I watched Life Of Pi from one of those Samsung 4k hard drives the other day..picture was superb, the colours were vibrant especially. Oh, and the film was excellent too.
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Well I've ordered it and it's been delivered, but the telly's still in its box until our building work's done. Frustrated? Me?
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Ran (Akira Kurosawa) has been restored to 4k and I believe is now available on Blue Ray.
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Gravity maybe? The Force Awakens? Finding Dory?
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Doesn't look like any of those are out in 4k yet...

Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
The Martian was playing in HDR 4k in a richer sounds when I went to check it out and looked pretty marvelous imo
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Yep, got that one free with the Blu-Ray player. Should be installing everything tonight so hopefully by then I'll be able to comment.
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Well, I got everything set up on Friday night, and after fiddling to get the 'Smart' remote set up, it's all good. SD looks OK, but obviously has a few glitches. HD channels on Tivo (1080i) look pretty good. Amazon and Netflix 4k look great, and UHD Blu-Ray with HDR looks magnificent. Life of Pi is certainly a brilliant film to show off the capabilities, and isn't too bad a film on its own. The Whale-leap scene is truly spectacular.

I've got that one as well, maybe this Friday it'll get an airing...
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
As others have said, Life of Pi was amazing visually when I saw it in theatres, would look great on a 4K screen. Pacific Rim is a good choice too, as well as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which just got a 4K release.
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
tron legacy, there is'nt a 4k release, but the 1080p still looks good and you can find faults in your monitors fake spec refresh rate

Watched this a few days back and I was very underwhelmed. As a reference film, there's not enough colour to give it any wow factor or show off any HDR aspect. It's a very grimly shot film - lots of mud, blood and more mud and not really suited to showing off your new TV.
(It's a great film btw! Just not a show off one!)
Re: Best film to showcase 4k/HDR
Life of Pi, The Revenant, Deadpool, The martian and Mad Max have all been pretty good in 4k so far.
