Star Trek:Discovery and The Orville - what do you think about them??

After having watched both, they do seem interesting takes on the Trek formula. Star Trek: Discovery being somewhat more gritty and The Orville more like TNG/Voyager with more jokes thrown in.

Have'nt seen the orville but Discovery was pretty good I thought. Only a couple of episodes in so early days but looking forward to the next one. Apparently its set a decade before Kirk.

    Pretty much this.

I always give a new TV show six episodes to grab me before I cast final judgment, but The Orville strikes me as a prime candidate for mid-season cancellation. The third episode was a little better than the first two, but not by much.

    I really enjoyed Discovery.

I tend to be wary of pilot episodes as they can be vastly different in both tone & plot to the established show.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Discovery pilots but I'm keeping my powder dry as we've not met the most important secondary characters yet (the leads ship Captain & whoever the main protagonist will be,) and I'm sure the show runners won't be throwing as much budget towards space combat and explosions in a full season episode.

    So I'm hopeful, but wary.

Aside from the story, discovery looked visually stunning.

Re: Star Trek:Discovery and The Orville - what do you think about them??

Interestingly enough The Orville seems to be getting higher ratings on IMDB than Discovery!! It don't think it is that bad TBH - its much more of a light hearted silly affair. I don't know if some of the IMDB ratings are partly down to CBS restricting access to Discovery in the US to their $6 a month channel instead of showing it on Netflix like they are doing outside the US.

Its a bit of a worry as whether the series will continue past one series will be down to primarily US viewing figures, and I do wonder how many people who signed up to watch were taking advantage of the free trial. I can understand why CBS has done it,so they can push their own premium channel but at the same time,I do think they are potentially reducing viewing figures in the US.

Regarding the first two episodes - they are the backstory to the show and unlike other Trek shows it seems to be more orientated around the story of one character.

Having said that the SFX especially sets and makeup was very good on Discovery but I am not a fan of the external ship SFX - it seems less realistic than say The Expanse especially with regards to lighting, and for me contrasts with the rest of the visual effects.

Not seen the Orville yet, not heard of it till now, but I'll give it a go, cheers!

As for Star Trek Discovery, I enjoyed it, only a few minor gripes..
Why have a woman called Michael? lol
Too many Klingon subtitles, only a few were necessary, w know they're alien and speak a different language!
The graphic intro theme was awful.

As i said, only minor things, I can look past those, Trek is back!!

If the 2 pilots had been stuck together and released as a standalone film, I think it would have been one of the better Trek films. Other than that it's too early to judge anything yet; as others have said the pilot was setting up the backstory and I don't think it represents the "true" show.

Just watched the 1st two episodes of Discovery on Netflix on my LG OLED telly. As the credits flashed up it popped up 'HDR on' and the visuals were stunning.

I'd not really read much about it, but I agree with Bagnaj97 - it would have done well even as a movie IMO. Certainly better than Star Trek Beyond IMO.

Re: Star Trek:Discovery and The Orville - what do you think about them??

I miss Jason Issacs... He was one of the best things about ST: D.

While happy, preachy Star Trek has gone just a bit darker, it seems like Seth MacFarlane has gone more family-friendly.
The Orville was fun, but it felt like they were holding back and trying to comply with some sort of enforced censorship rating... almost like watching Robocop with the swearing dubbed - "Forget you, muddy funster!!"
I did like that it still had some serious basis in the stories though.

Now the stupid CBS legal action is out of the way, I'm looking forward to Axenar. Cut back but still at least happening.

Re: Star Trek:Discovery and The Orville - what do you think about them??

I'm looking forward to season two for both of them, but after seeing both of their first seasons...I am looking forward to the Orville more than ST: Discovery (which also has a rather unfortunate TLA )

The Orville just has the theme and style of what I would call "proper" star trek down to a tee - with some humour thrown in. Star Trek Discovery is too close to the non-cannon rebooted film series for me and comes over way too preachy. I really dislike Sonequa Martin-Green's character in it and the way she plays Michael - I think a different (female) lead would have made all the difference. I don't consider ST: D cannon really and see it as more of another sci fi show. I enjoyed Enterprise a LOT more

That doesn't mean I am not looking forward to it mind, just that I enjoyed the Orville (and since I mentioned it, Enterprise) more. Reminds me very much of "nu-Who" - an entertaining show in it's own right (up until the latest, terrible season) but it's not really Dr Who.

Re: Star Trek:Discovery and The Orville - what do you think about them??

Not seen Discovery (yet) so reserving judgement on that.

Recorded Orville, watched about 4 or 5 episodes and it was of sufficient quality and appeal that I kept putting off watching any more until I was 'in the mood' for it. After not feeling it for several months, just block-deleted it.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess, but "silly" seems like understatement of the year. Okay, a few good one-liners, but even as a send-up it didn't work for me. Then again, The Simpsons barely gets more than the occasional smile from me. Muppets, yes, but Family Guy ... shudder.

Like I said, strokes for folks.
