Black Sails - any other fans of 'Spartacus at sea'?

Having really enjoyed all four seasons of Spartacus, I gave Black Sails a shot in the first season. I loved it - the uncompromising violence and nudity plus the first rate acting, combined with some pitch black humour really does the business for me- and I'm finding the second to be even better. I hit up the search function and found nothing, are there any other fans?

yeah .. stars are bringing some very good programs to the tv hope they bring a few more
What does it matter now if men believe or no?
What is to come will come. And soon you too will stand aside,
To murmur in pity that my words were true

Didn't make it through the first season......it just didn't seem right to me. I thought the acting was clunky, the sets looked like half the items had been gathered from ikea and then there were the amount of sunglass wearing pirates....

Lol that gave me a WTF moment too!..

So watched the first season but I'm not sure life is long enough to waste any more time with second season. May just see the 1st episode and decide from there but I can't say it's on my "must watch list".

I got really bored of Spartacus...

However, I did really enjoy Black Sails.
It's not the most amazing of shows, but still good switch-off TV. Looking forward to the next season!

If you fancy something a touch more cerebral and piratey, try Crossbones.
It's only the one season (so far), but features Richard Coyle bandying wit and word with John Malkovich, which sounds just like some of Shakespeare's best!

I really enjoyed crossbones, shame it was as short as it was.

That is exactly what bored me about Spartacus.
I almost didn't carry on with Black Sails when the swearing started - Don't get me wrong; I'm an ex-Soldier and curse like the proverbial trooper...

But when a show starts bandying the c-word every other line, with nudity and violence to match, it just looks like it was written by a patheric 12-year-old who just discovered there are naughtier things than saying "Willy" and "Bum"...

TBH, I get severely bored with *all* the shagging and violence in The Tudors, Borgias, Game Of Thrones, True Blood, Spartacus and all the other crap my Mrs watches... And yes, she watches banshee too!
It just smacks of TV networks seeing how much they can get away with.

I'm quite enjoying it. The plot is surprisingly good; not what I was expecting. I was expecting more violence and bonking.

No idea where the sunglass hate comes from. They had stained glass and glasses. As it turns out Chinese judges were wearing them as early as 1300.

If they were polarised then yes; I can see the problem.

Rofl, the hate comes from the fact that it's absurd.
Your link also prooves the very same thing, chinese judges are not the same as pirates in the caribbean. It also says that protection from the sun was never thier primary function.

Re: Black Sails - any other fans of 'Spartacus at sea'?

Tinted glasses were used around the 1700s, when it was believed the different colours helped with vision correction. General corrective lenses and frames were definitely in use in the 1300s, as they appear in portraits and there are guild regulations governing their sale.

But since it's just the one character (that I know of), is done more as a trait than an attempt at historical accuracy and is amidst far greater crimes against authenticity - I think it's a very minor thing that does not detract from the show, really.

Oh, and add to that the fact that this is openly touted as a fictional prequel to a fictional literary work anyway, I really don't think it matters a jot!

Re: Black Sails - any other fans of 'Spartacus at sea'?

Just caught the last episode of Season 4 and the grand conclusion.... Very nicely done!!

I have to say, it got proper-good somewhere in Season 2 and really ended up doing a fine job of walking the balance between fictional prequel, historical trivia featurette, solid entertainment (complete with nudity and swearing, which tone themselves right down once people are drawn in past the casual curiosity), and just good all-round engaging story.

Loved the way they ended it and managed to tie so many threads into Trasure Island, still leaving possibilities for other tales but without having loose ends or compromising the excellent conclusion of this tale.

I kinda hope they get the same cast in to do Treasure Island itself, really.
I enjoyed the Eddie Izzard version, but these guys would make it fantastic!

Re: Black Sails - any other fans of 'Spartacus at sea'?

I have seen season's 1, 2 and 3 but haven't activated this years free trial yet to see season 4.

If you like this then I think Marco Polo will interest you as well. That is completely different to what I was expecting and is very good. I think that's on Netflix though.

First rate ensemble of actors, writing and visuals.

I was hooked (pun?) from S1 Ep1 and each season improved upon the previous one.

An excellent series (IMHO) and 'must-see' TV.
