More new home made turntables. (Image heavy !!)
After my success with the block oak chopping board turntable ( https://forums.hexus.net/movies-tv-m...de-myself.html ) I kept my eyes open for more wood to make more TTs.
I spotted a couple of guys selling kitchen worktop offcuts spruced up as chopping boards at a local car boot sale, the first one I bought was used in the turntable referenced aove.
Then I decided I wanted more so went to their company and picked up a piece of 40mm thick block oak, a piece of beech and two slabs of Corian - polyester resin compound - each slab is a kitchen sink cutout, and perfectly sized for TT making, a fiver each. I since picked up three more similar slabs of oak at another car boot for a quid each !
This is copied from my FB post :
Righty Ho, here we go with the newest turntable project. Using a really hefty slab of poly resin, 7kg weight. A real treat to work, nice sharp edges on drilled holes, a nice pale greay-ish marbley effect colour, 25mm thick.
Drilled out to take a Dual 505 series main bearing and sub platter, and a Pro-Ject Debut II arm. Arm has been rewired, and repaired - the headshell piece had snapped in half, so Ive glued it together plus a top piece of Bakelite for added rigidity. Will be fitted with an AT95E cartridge. Main platter will be glass.
Fitted Dual CS505-2 main bearing mounted on inside of die cast aluminium box. Levelled.
Arm is also finished, and mounts nicely, Ive added a 6mm cork disc underneath to give a bit more stability, as the arm base is only a fairly thin shell of black ABS plastic. AT95E fitted.
Added Dual CS-505-2 platter, locking ring and mat. Main bearing is now encased in a cast aluminium box, looks a lot neater. Now using a different motor with voltage regulator and a Pro-Ject pulley, manul speed change by belt shift.
I picked up some old bus ticket motors very cheap off a boot sale, turns out that if I use a power reg board and drop the voltage right down, they will spin a Rega pulley onto a rega sub platter perfectly at 33 or 45 AND they are as silent as a whisper ! I have three working motors, three arms, three main bearings and three sub platters, therefore, three turntables :)
29 Oct update. Lid drilled, new hinges on top rear of base plate, support arm added to keep lid up. Arm wired to twin phono and earth tag on rear. Feet fitted from an old Technics deck. Motor mounted on 3mm thick steel plate and isolated from baseplate by Sorbothane.
New voltage regulator for use with 5vdc plug power supply, motor needs 2.125 vdc, a LMN317 with a few components and is extremely stable with very fine adjustment.
I'm going to call it the Tangram TT1, Tangram is an old nickname of mine from 1980 when I was in Saudi, I listened to nothing but Tangerine Dream :)

Im now on the MKII, made from a Rega sub-platter and bearing with a Pro-Ject arm, Im thinking of calling it a Re-Ject :)

I spy a man in need of a 3D printer :D
Pulleys, hinges etc should be quite easy to knock out. Perhaps complete tone-arms. A complete platter might be tricky just to find a printer big enough :)

Yep, that thought has crossed my mind on more than one occasion !

and possibly sold :) I mentioned it to a guy in Northampton who is heavily into his music and has a £5k valve amp, he said he was starting to be interested in vinyl, I mentioned this and a price of 250 ish, and he was quite calm.

Should have said £250 if you tell all your mates, £500 if not :p
