    LOTR Extended - Excited!

Pardon my eruption but I'm excited.

What with COVID I had to cancel holiday plans a few times and ended up with lots of unused days off. So, since I always take at least two days off around Thanksgiving to celebrate that holiday (and also my anniversary - can't forget that!) I've ended up extending that and I'll have the whole last week of November off. YES!

Since COVID has really dampened a lot of social activities etc. we're going to try to make the most of that week for a whole Thanksgiving/pre-Christmas celebration week with various activities and events.

However, one thing I'm going to do at last, is have a bit of a Lord of the Rings marathon and over the week watch each of the six movies in their extended editions (which I've never seen). I'll probably do one a day. My wife is up for it and one other friend at least. I'm even tempted to splurge on an upgrade of our TV to a higher-def one just to enjoy the spectacle (we'll see about that).

I was going to watch them in chronological order, however, I came across a suggested order of:

    Fellowship
    Hobbit Trilogy
    Two Towers
    Return of the King

So I think I'm going to go that route!

Man I'm looking forward to a week off work!

Just have to survive a couple more weeks to get there!

    Re: LOTR Extended - Excited!

That will be great fun, but just do LOTR, skip the hobbit.

Also be aware they were filmed some time ago, there's not masses to be gained going high definition, 720p would be fine.

    Re: LOTR Extended - Excited!

I'd probably watch them in release order, if anything.

FYI: the whole Peter Jackson collection is getting released on UHD this month. Might be worth waiting for those if you don't mind parting with some cash. Seems to be high-hopes of a decent transfer (unlike the lack-luster Blou-Rays)...
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I didn't have the problem that others did. It had been years and years since I read the book, so overall I'll watch them for the spectacle if nothing else.

I saw that, although I thought it was to be released next year? Either way, I'll watch them now just because of the time commitment it takes. I have the week free so I'll make the most of it, and I'll see about UHD next year.

Also, I might rope my 9 year old son in. He hasn't seen them yet. My younger daughter would be scared witless - nightmares for sure - but I think my son might be fine with them. I'll have to see about a preview of some scenes and how he responds.

    Even more excited!

I was drowsy watching the second one at the cinema (so not the extended version) with friends, but I wasn't particularly interested in the series anyway as I found The Hobbit a bit of a slog to read through (which I think I then gave up on at some point) and enough to put me off that whole world.

They are already quite long films, and the extended versions are close to 4 hours IIRC. I had just watched the 1st extended one,so was trying to watch all of them in one setting and couldn't!

You tried to watch about 12 hours in one go?

    Re: LOTR Extended - Excited!

You're missing the essential component - the original 1978 Bakshi animated version.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lo...gs_(1978_film)

OK it's goit some dire costume work at the beginning, BUT.. there are entire scenes that smash the modern versions to pieces. Better quotes, more accurately portrayed

It's not entire, they ran out of money. It's not true to every page of the book and nothingh ever will be

But... its a stunning thing and if you look deep into it, you will find mithril and gold

    Re: LOTR Extended - Excited!

The UHDs are out 30th Nov, so probably too late for your binge-fest, and at £75 for the 3 films (plus c£200 for a UHD player if you haven't already got one) that's quite an investment.

I bought the plain blu-ray extended versions when they came out, never watched them.

Am I going to get the UHDs? Yes, of course. And I might even watch them...

Edit: UHD version included Theatrical and extended, so you can decide yourself how sleepy you are.

WB missed an opportunity for gouging there, fair play to them.

I saw that when I was about ten years old (a borrowed pirate copy on a Betamax tape iirc ). It impressed me so much that I got the books out of the library and reasd the lot - I hadn't even heard of it up until that point. It also meant I didn't know about The Hobbit and read that afterwards.

I've read them several times since, and I loved the Peter Jackson trilogy. Really wasn't a fan of the Hobbit movies though.
