I don't listen as much as I did when it was new, but then I don't listen to any music as much as I used to.

I won't say MJ is a favourite, because I don't really have favourites.

Rather, I select music according to what I'm doing, what my mood currently is, and/or what I want my mood to be. Some music I find uplifting, some drpressing. Some gets me going, some relaxes me.


For instance, if I'm relaxing in a comfy chair, or sunning myself poolside, I'm likely to be listening to Bach's Brandenburg, Vivaldi's Four Seasons or a Mozart Aria than Bruce Springsteen, MJ or Meat Loaf. If I'm out for a bike ride, it'll be the latter, not the former.

Music, for me, equals manipulation of my emotional state, so I pick it to enhance, reinforce or alter, that state.

So given no favourites as such, I still rate MJ highly. Very highly. It's all subjective, though.

He had the X factor on stage. One of a kind. Dance with you from his Off The Wall album is one of my fave tracks from him, but he has quite a few.

Now my nephews are listening to him. He appeals to different age groups.

That is a very astute observation but sadly for me personally music has took a nose dive and the only emotions i feel from most of the bile released now is a sick and sad feeling mixed with the thought all music now seems very cookie cut and similiar. (also a lot of music had a very positive vibe to it, whereas now it has a sexual and materialistic tone to it)


MJ was a legend no one even comes close to his musical output, children who hear his music for the first time want more and my son who is 15 now likes way more old music than new i mean 70s to 90s.

Well, I can't say I'm exactly up to speed on "modern" music. I mean, I don't much listen to music stations these days, so I hesitate to express much of an opinion but if forced, I'd say I agree with you in relation to about 90% of what I hear. My guess is that too much of it is about manufactured bands, and sheer commercialism, rather than actual musicians. But there are a few gems out there, even today.

In reality, even in the "good ol' days", I suspect that the ratio wasn't that much better. The difference is we remember the 20% that was great and have long forgotten the 80% that was garbage. What we hear, now, of the 60s, 70s etc is the 20%, but is now 100% of our memories of that age. If that makes sense?

I agree there was and is a lot of rubbish about but the charts changed at a much much faster pace than they do now, i remember a few years ago a news report saying the music industry wants to slow the charts down as they do not make as much money from the songs that get into the charts as they used to and that is exactly what they have done.

Yes i agree the memories are a merged together and looked at with rose tinted glasses but the charts are much much less diverse and vastly slowed down to allow Ed Sheeran and Taylor swift to stay at number one for weeks.

I know most of the songs that are out because heart and capitol fm are blasted at me 8 hours a day lol

Can't say I'm some megga fan. But I do like quite a few MJ songs. Huge shame there just isn't much available on DVD/BD when it comes to live shows.
I still remember seeing his 3D show/ride at Disney

Not a fan myself although a couple of the Jackson 5 songs are good. Thriller was ok although it was more of a thing because of the video more than anything else.

Funny he well known for the moonwalk which he didn't invent.

my first album that I owned rather than recorded off the radio was Dangerous on cassette. I recently rebought it on CD so I could add it to my digital collection and it is still as good as it was then. some great tracks. I also bought bad and history. just excellent excellent albums. what is easy to forget is how much of his stuff he wrote himself, and there are a number of bsides he wrote that never got out on the albums to make way for ones by other writers eg man in the mirror. plus his ability to advise others eg his influence on advising Queen to make Another one bites the dust the lead single. An odd chap but amazingly talented and a big part of pop history.

For me, music took a nose dive from around 1988. A lot of independent record labels were merged together to form large conglomerates and rinsed of musical integrity. Music became more formulated to cater for the masses and maximising returns. Pretty faces and dance routines were more important than singing ability. What I hate the most is when they sample classic tunes (ie the ones that were mainly from the underground scene) to new music so in my mind there's nothing new in music. Unfortunately those who says music is good are usually the ones who have grown up in the era of marketed manufactured music and/or were never part of the original underground music scene.

MJ isn't a legend in my books. His music became more pop orientated and targeted to kids while his earlier music were more along the lines of R&B/funk and felt more grown up. He has lost a lot of the black followers for this very reason.

Will music rediscover its creativity once again? I'm not so sure. Bruno Mars and Pharrell Williams both had great chart success by being influenced by some great music of the 1970/80s.

I'd say the opposite - Anyone can be a star, if only they have a camcorder and a YouTube account.
Plus there are SOO many 'stars' of mediocre qulity being pushed on us, from the internet and The Voice (UK, US, Aus, Greece, Latvia, and just about every other country) and The X Factor/Pop Idol and all the other shows, that we're spoiled for choice and anyone with just the slightest extra bit of talent looks like an utter star by comparison... which is where I'd put the likes of Bruno Mars and Vanilla Ice, based on what I've heard of both their works.

We're absolutely drowning in stars, to the point where no-one can hold peoples' attention long enough to really rise up to the heights that our previous generation did.
One of my favourite performers has had a career lasting over 40 years... These days you'll be lucky if people still even remember your name after 40 days!

I haven't listened to the radio or paid attention to the charts since about 1990, to be honest... I think Bruce Springsteen and The Sisters Of Mercy were still charting, last time I looked!!

I was born in the very early 80s so perhaps a bit late for the MJ craze. I like earth song - that was a good project - but I wouldn't call myself a MJ fan. Just like I wouldn't say I'm really a Madonna fan but I love Ray of Light.

Honestly I've been quite picky with music growing up and I do continue to be. Only things like REM, Green day(? dookie?), Nirvana, similar quality female fronted bands (Placebo...) really did anything for me in the 90s. In the late 90s I got into D&B, some hip hop (not the mainstream stuff), Ninja Tune, Big Chill, Mixmaster Morris, Chemical Brothers, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Red Snapper, Adam Freeland, 4 Hero, Jazzanova, Cinematic Orchestra, Roni Size err that kind of thing. I even had a radio show for some time in Uni in the late 90s. People got me into stuff like this! (edit: bonus mix)

These days I am more than happy to associate with a lot of mainstream DJ and artists. It's like the quality has percolated to the mainstream (well maybe 20% of it) and no-one's really noticed if you know what I mean? I'm still not a big Ed Sheeran fan or whatever but even that is 10x better than most of the early 90s, unless you were WELL into the chill / dance / rave scene at the time (and even that's aged badly). Music has honestly never been better.

Given that, even mediocre music can come alive at the hands of a good DJ / VJ and they can throw the odd cheese tune in and make it work somehow in the right space. I have no doubt that thanks to the likes of Giles Peterson, Radio 1 (generally), and evolving musical taste things will and do improve. I also have my pop/rock diva sweethearts [Evanescence, Avril, Katy, Paramore, Taylor, Natasha, many I forget] that I really appreciate. It's not easy to put together an album like reputation for example, even in 2017.

Sting/Beatles/Grateful Dead/Robbie Williams/most of X factor/Justin Beib/Eminem/whatever meme musician like Kanye or whatever? No thanks. We've done MUCH better before, were you NOT PAYING ATTENTION?!

And I do encourage you to look up some of the artists I named positively.

Bring on the GOOD music!
