A bittersweet story but still a beautifully done video.
More than one track, a little old? , but deserves an audience IMHO. Soz for possible derail.

I've seen few holograms of different dead and alive musicians and they've always seemed like projections. But the technology is advancing quickly. People who have been to see this Roy Orbison show are responding as though he was there. It's opening up all sorts of possibilities.

Novelty track of the week(if you've seen media)> I like this idea of using found sounds and either; using them to give atmosphere or turning them into track in their own right. Like this track by Ben Suffield 'self checkout riddim' recorded at Tescos.

There were two cultural events today; YT removing Drill music and the release of info on Active Shooter. Both are about censorship vs decency/morality(is that the right way to put it).
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...otings-n878156
I'm not sure about censorship with music, if you look back all sorts of tracks have been censored for being offensive from 'When I'm Cleaning Windows'(different meaning today!) to 'Relax. Hip Hop has always been somewhat offensive and edited for radio. I'm not sure if YT has censored music before. I wonder if making something banned makes it cult. Also the only way to find out what people are experiencing in their lives is through expression; Kendrick gets a Grammy(12, I think), but Drill is censored. I understand concerns it's fuelling gang violence apparently, and drug money is not at all relevant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdS3Q97NbE0
With Active Shooter, I'm surprised it took so long, it's the ultimate ironic comment on American culture. I don't think non gamers realise that, gaming is removed from reality, it has an ironic reactionary code of it's own.
Yeah there's a lot of content apparently on youtube and the Ilk that's creating a problem for impressionable or troubled young minds and creating in them the idea that things like carrying weapons, gang culture, anti social behaviour and all that rubbish are somehow 'in' or 'cool' or even a 'commonality' (ergh). I am actually for more censorship of online content in general though at the same time against the general principle of censoring, many things, like well intentioned news journalism or talk radio perhaps even art. We've got a right royal mess of easily accessible 'content' (output) to clean up. We need to start soon.
Honestly even some of the mainstream hiphop or similar style stuff really jarring @ me, C.F, the nasty and shockingly crass 50 Cent - In Da Club. And (...?!!) .. . many other productions...
I'm still not sure; life imitates art, or art imitates life. Hip Hop has always been about drugs, gangs and violence. So of it was accepted with Tupac, but he lived in that world. Kendrick's lyrics are smart. I heard a Rap track on BBC recently that openly glorified gun violence and being a dealer(WU Tang, I think). so there's always hypocrisy.
It could be argued that America exported gang culture to the world, and glorified gun violence. I think most of the gangstas just copycat real violence, not what they hear or see in culture. That's just a medium for bragging. Not sure yet.
Fair post johnroe I 'reckon.
Couple of things:
- I don't think that glorifying gun violence and illicit undefined street problematism drugs (and other disasters like exploitation and coercion and STDs....) is | are #an example of some kind of hypocrisy in honestly any way (I hope), it's pure irresponsibility and stupidity really. It's worse than that but I won't provide the vocabulary, I've made the point I guess.
- In parts of society on the continent of Africa it seems that serious and unsane violent conduct is the mean (average) norm rather than something that should be looked down on and policed and amended. This is perhaps what our ethnic artists to which you refer are trying to warn about or work out (understand / reform ) or maybe fix. It's not working out though in my opinion. We've known about this problem for decades (we as in something like the media industry celebs).
--Of course they are also exposed to hurtful crime and violence and others and such. I am not sure if these gangstas (to use your phrase) are properly ''copycat''ing violence in their community or location or state. I think they are just trying to use their freedom of expression to dispel fear of action in others - part of the problem with this ethos is that they're literally being pathetically and completely irresponsible towards their nurturing or (sort of) cultivating responsibilities to others (and even themselves) ..- no t just their immediate family, really all those exposed to their things. Even their enemies.
Bragging is not really to be encouraged (perhaps unless it's about something like a qualification or grade or PHD), especially with the categories of content we're considering here.
You've all got freedom to be yourselves but this is certainly not in a societal and communal vacuum! You're 'just', one of many other valuable people.
There's some talk about this in media, I think Julian Baggini is right, a contributing factor to the escalating gang violence is the drug use by mostly well off middle class users.
https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...-gauke-cocaine
So I'm going with this theory at present; Drill music is just an expression by a group of young people about their lives. In just the same way Kendrick addresses police violence against young blacks in US. Banning a few Drill tunes is just a distraction, the real issue here the UK's (£6-10Bn) drug use per year. Because of laws most of the trade is carried out nefariously. But that's an issue no government is willing to tackle.
It's the same with gaming, blaming it for shooters is just distraction by NRA. I just saw a stat, gun industry worth $50Bn a year in US domestic market. There's a sort of collective delusion about the real issues.
I like this band Goat, in a world of generic hip hop and electro they stand out. This will wake you up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMOLcqc_sLc
I suppose some elements are political correctness are useful in terms of tolerance. But everyday I read about someone being sacked or reprimanded because the aren't using the approved language. I think in the future, political in-correctness will be considered a luxury. A holiday resort run by Iggy Pop.>
