    Top Gun 2....

Image taken from a Tom Cruise tweet.

The nostalgic part of me wants this to succeed. The rest of me knows it won't...probably.

80's movies existed in a less critical environment where things being unrealistic wasn't as criticised as it is now, and where things could just be 'cool' or fun. Really not sure Top Gun can or will translate to today. Then there's the fact that Tom Cruise tends to be front and centre whereas he'll be a teacher in this film. Will it focus on him, or the pilots...? And do we need that story telling again...?

Or am I just getting cynical in my old age?

    Re: Top Gun 2....

I honestly thought this had died a death in Development Hell....

Thing is, even when Top Gun came out, it was heavily criticised by anyone who knew anything about anything featured, as there's barely a single scene without a factual error or gaffe. I used to be acquainted with a US Navy pilot and former XO of the real TOPGUN (one word, all caps, don't ask) and the rant-list was immense. Even British Army armourers were picking holes in the 'Goose Ejects' scene...

But still, it's as much awesomely silly fun today as it was back then... and I'm still arguing with others bikers over exactly which motorcycle was featured!!

Hoping for more of the same, Mister Cruise!!

I'm sure it will be dripping in factual errors and cliche.

I'll have my ticket in the 4D cinema please so I can be bumped around on take off etc, flight sequences in native 3D rather than post processed would be nice

    Re: Top Gun 2....

Topgun wasn't really about dog fighting though was it. It was more about bromance and romance against the backdrop of fighter jets.

Those three things are all a fighter pilot's life comprises though, innit?

"Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.", you have to grin when you hear that.

It was just a good yarn, well told and shown.

    Re: Top Gun 2....

I'm looking forward to this. This was one of the go to movies when I was a child... used to forward all the romance bits to get to the action film parts (I loved fighter jets when I was a kid).

I wonder who the antagonists will be, as doubt it'll be Russian "Mig-28's"... hopefully it'll be half-decent film.

See, that's what I think they can't do these days. At least, not with an 80's sequel.

    Please may I be wrong.

Some super-AI, probably created by a game designer!!

Alas no, as the only people with F-14s still flying are the Iranians... but as a safety measure, the US didn't sell them any spare parts!!

Also, that's an F/A-18F Super Hornet in the teaser photo up top... and Mitchell now has a Captain's rank but is still holding his old HGU-33 helmet.

Wait a minute wasn't the original an over long music video, paid for by the US air force? (I mean I like a good conspiracy theory, but I believe it was a recruitment video).

Which just goes to show how desperate the film industry is, endless remakes, sequels and prequels. They've wrung the juices out of writers like Philip K Dick. I even hear in America, that if you have some strange event happen to you(like seeing a good TC movie, except Risky Bus), it's the film company first on the phone trying to buy the rights. Too many films, too much profit.

    Nope.
It was inspired by a documentary on the real TOPGUN (one word, all caps, don't ask) and the film makers approached the Navy for their 'collaboration' and 'input', because it opened doors they would otherwise not even be able to dream of.
Had the USAF paid for this, the Navy would have looked very bad and Louis Gosset Jnr would have starred.

This one has been on the cards for decades, though. It's not a new thing.

I rather liked the Electric Dreams series...
You have Vikings, GoT obviously, The Last Kingdom, The Expanse, Altered Carbon, Lucifer, Preacher... Quite a bit, if you go looking. You just had Harry Potter, too and there's more on the way.
Even looking at Cobra Kai, that's not only good enough on its own, it actually helps right some of the wrongs done by the contemporary sequels!

The problem is the need to rake in enough of a mainstream audience, to get the ratings, to make the money, or distributors and broadcasters won't pick your films and shows up. YouTube isn't even a massively viable option any more, as every man jack has their slice of that pie to try and flog.

If only an AI would write us something interesting and unique.....
