    The World At War

Apparently I've been living under a rock, because until today I'd never heard of it.

It's highly lauded, getting high marks across the board.

Is it that good? Any biases?

Suitable for watching with an 8 year old?

    Thanks.

It's looooong and awesome. Utterly awesome.

Lawrence Olivier was the finest choice and yes it's suitable for an 8 year old, cuddled up to a parent. But it's a long series!

Kids can never learn that stuff enough in 2019. so if they're interested.. do it soon.

It's brilliant, the standard-setter for any war documentary. Not seen anything that comes close. Harrowing and dignified.

    Re: The World At War

I bought mine on DVD a number of years back. I've still yet to sit down and watch it.
Stupidity I bought it at the start of the centenary of WWI, and now we're at the end of that centenary.
I went with the DVD over the blu ray based on comments regarding the picture being morphed from 4:3 to 16:9 and bits being chopped off. I personally prefer 4:3 if that's what it was shot in. Don't know why you would ever want to change it.

Not sure if there has been a revision since.

I was about 7 when our history teacher started the WW1 stuff on us. Oddly the bodies never phased me.

    Re: The World At War

I remember watching this when I was younger, as had a keen interest in WW2 history back then in school. And the theme music is still so memorable... I liked the series back then.

Edit: So apparently the Blu-Ray has been re-mastered. Might have to add it to my wishlist, as would like to see the series again.

    Re: The World At War

    Yeah a very good series..
    With some issues.
It avoids any and all critisism of Russian troops. (presumably as it was filmed during the cold war??)
And was filmed before Enigma was known.
So, it's be no means complete or full picture. But it's still a pretty good all round view.

    Re: The World At War

Is it that good? YES! This and Ken Burns American Civil War are two of my favourite military history documentaries. Thorough, well presented, no BS and rich in facts.

Any biases? Qe? No, fairly even IIRC. Some bits might possibly a bit incorrect now given declassification of certain aspects of enigma, and the more covert espionage stuff, since the series was filmed in the 1970s but it's not like watching a modern US "documentary" on Yesterday. Best of all there is no BS re-enactment/dramatisation anywhere in sight. Hurrah.

Suitable for watching with an 8 year old? Yes. Mostly. Auschwitz etc might be a bit heavy for that age, and the occasional corpse in the images in other episodes, but generally sure.

    Re: The World At War

The Russian front episode is not suitable imo. Intact the first 10 mins is a bit rough too. And the Finnish war ( too ignorant to member if someone wants to help out); frozen bodies in the snow. Seeing the bodies stacked like firewood and state of the survivors from Auschwitz is horrifying. The whole series is depressing and a real wake up to the hardship that was endured; very educational.

I got the box set for a 10 yr old, speaking of which one revision is awful. They cleaned up the footage then then sliced off the top and bottom to make it wide-screen :/
