Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
I've just started watching James May's Our Man In Japan.
So far so good, typical James May style, nothing lost from BBC days.
What other Prime TV series, drama or documentary would you recommend?
It's clear a lot of BBC staff have moved over to Amazon/Netflix probably starting from the Grand Tour days.
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
The Boys.
The Grand Tour.
Vikings.
James May has also released his James May's Toy Stories onto Amazon recently, if you're into his stuff and haven't seen it previously.

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
I've watched and liked the following:
+ The whole of X-Files (used to watch it on BBC2 back in the day). Have started to re-watch again... but slower this time.
+ Supernatural - Heard of it back in the day but never saw it. Binge watched it when it came on Prime. It's quite a good series.
+ The Expanse - Is a pretty decent sci-fi series I've recently enjoyed.
+ Lethal Weapon - This is a really fun series... seasons 1 & 2 at least (they're the ones currently on prime)
+ Black Sails - Pirates! Decent watch. series is now completed and I enjoyed it.
+ Lie To Me - Quite fun to watch. Tim Roth is pretty good. Shame they cancelled it just as the background story was getting interesting.
+ Napoleon - 4 part drama about the man, with a few familiar faces.
+ The Last Ship - Quite a good series about a virus wiping out most of the world, and the work towards a cure... I've still gotta see the last couple of seasons
+ The Boys - First season was an alright watch, it's a bit on the extreme when it comes to violence etc... but then so is the source material (it's actually worse in places)
+ Preacher - It's an intriguing series. Also on the violent side at times.
+ Lucifer - Is quite an alright watch - like most series I have this playing in the background while I'm doing something else.
+ New Amsterdam - Hospital procedural - the only one I've ever watched of this type. It's alright.
+ The Tick
+ Ultimate Force - Think it used to be on ITV. Fun to rewatch again.
+ Taken (Steven Spielberg Presents Taken) - Watched it on BBC2 back in the day. Was pretty good.
+ Jim Henson's The Storyteller: Greek Myths - Saw it on Prime once on the home page. Was good.
These are not available on prime now, but they do come on and off
+ Criminal Minds - Pretty good, if a little disturbing at times, series.
+ Agents Of Shield
+ Eureka - A town full of geniuses and a sheriff who is not, but ends up solving most of the problems - I really enjoyed this series.
+ Constantine - Only lasted 13 episodes, but I liked it.
These are just some of the series I've enjoyed watching on Prime...

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
You've made my list look, well there's no other way to put this, absolutely blood crap.
Good effort there Scryder!
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
The Expanse.
Vikings.
That's it for my list.
Edit: Tell a lie, i watched The Boys too which was ok.
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
As Vikings is going to be available on Netflix soon, will it disappear from Amazon Prime ?
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Just to add two Neil Gaiman projects...
American Gods,
Good Omens (actually available on BBC2 at the mo too)
And Picard looks like it might be worth a watch
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
American Gods - I tried really hard to get into this. It promises so much but the latest season was boring. I haven't read the book so maybe the story promises so much but is boring?
Good Omens - I found this enjoyable.
The Expanse - Watch it! The best Sci-Fi show currently available - bar none!
Picard - watched the first episode. I thought it was a very good pilot.
The Boys - Excellent.

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
MR ROBOT.
One of the best series of television I've ever seen
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
man in the high castle was good too. Not watched series 3, probably won't, but 1 was excellent and 2 wasn't too bad.
The Tick is ok when you want something light and silly
we enjoyed Red Oaks as well, but they suddenly pulled the plug on it mid series 3 which was a shame.
Some people like outlander, I'm 50:50. Tend to only watch it if I'm ill and bored.
You used to be able to get Agents of Shield which was good, but they seem to charge for that now.
Had a look tonight and it's suddenly full of garbage and random programs that sound like student media studies pilots. A lot of films have gone too. Quality is nose-diving vs a year ago. The push for sports has not helped things it would seem.

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Hand of God - very weird but good
Mr Robot - similarly weird but good
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - really weird but good
The man in the high tower - interesting premise, but I've only watched S1 so far
American Gods - I enjoyed the book more. I really wanted to like this but it was a bit meh.
Good Omens - great - really enjoyed that
Picard - great
Vikings - great
Sneaky Pete - great
Dark Matter - great scifi
Jack Ryan - pretty good
Lucifer - easy mindless viewing

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
James May : Our Man in Japan is excellent if you liked the older Michael Palin travel stuff
The Boys is also excellent if you want to watch something about Super Heroes and sick of all the Marvell stuff
Picard : Enough said!!!
Good Omens : If you liked the Pratchett adaptions that have been done in the past then this will be right up your street
X-Files is on there if you want some decent older stuff
Now I also have to mention the channels you can get on Amazon. You pay £4 per month per channel for them but some are better than others. As an example we have just signed up to Starzplay which has Fringe (excellent and kinda similar to X-Files) and other shows and movies.

Other suggestions mentioned:
Man in the High Castle - season 1 and 2 good but haven't seen 3
Jack Ryan - season 1 good, season 2 ridiculously implausible

I'm in Japan this week. Very much recommend 'Borderless' in Tokyo. It's the trippy art exhibition thing. It's weird and totally worth it. Let James May inspire you to visit.. Japan is my favourite country in Asia...

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Picard is good and I never watched the Star Trek TV show!
I've also been watching Parker's Trail which I have enjoyed but you might need an extra subscription to Discovery! :(
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
picard is awful. Won't be wasting time on a 2nd series. Won't give spoilers but laughable last two episodes, like the script writer asked his 4 year old for ideas and just put them without thinking.
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Highly recommend Justified. All 6 series now on prime.
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Good omens
American god's
Vikings
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Definitely go for 'The Expanse' - it's a very enjoyable watch!
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Some that havent been said,
The 100
The White Queen
Started watching The Purge but after a few episodes its a waste if time.

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Hi everyone !
So, if you like thrillers with action then I can recommend Jack Ryan.
It is that typical CIA-agent kind of thing, but really good actors and making. Also great if you liked the TV-show "The Office (US)" ;)
I also watched Vikings for some time, but I have to admit it never really got me. Sometimes I got bored a little ....
American Gods is amazing. It is very weird and it need some time to understand what is actually happening. But the pictures and story is really cool. A must-see if you are looking for something "different".
Probably the best one on Amazon so far is Carnival Row. AMAZING TV-show with fantasy-genre. Actors like Orlando Bloom. Nothing but great. Really thrilling and nothing for kids. One of the best TV-shiws I have seen in a while :D
Enjoy watching everyone !

Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
If you want something a bit different, there's a good documentary on Prime Video called Top Guns. As you might expect it's about Fighter Weapons School, Miramar, and F-14 Tomcats. It's basically interviews with some of the real pilots as well as lots of real footage from dogfights, carrier landings etc.
It's old (made in the late 80's I think, when the Tomcat was still in its prime) so is in 4:3 and SD. But if you're into military aviation it gives a real insight into what it was like to fly these beasts. And these real-life pilots are just as competitive as Maverick, Iceman, Viper and the rest of them.
There's even a section about night-time carrier landings. Honestly, I don't know how these guys managed to fit their balls inside the cockpit :D

I\'ve started to loathe Amazon for doing that.
I feel the free offerings are going to suffer soon that aren\'t Prime exclusives.

some stuff came back recently. Agents of shield series 6 is now free with prime, whereas a year ago they were charging so stuff does come through, so long as you don't mind a wait and all the inevitable spoilers in the office in the meantime. The latter is obviously less of an issue atm...

If not mentioned already, Upload is a good watch

I'm curious about this too. I watched the first 3 and a half episodes about 6 months ago, but just couldn't get into it, found the pace a bit too slow.
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Expanse and Picard for me but also enjoyed the boys
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
Upload is fantastic - can't wait for season 2. Good mix of dark comedy and drama with a perfect amount of what ifs.
-
Re: Amazon Prime - TV Recommendations
In my opinion, Criminal Minds is one of the best series on Prime, but the last season is not available yet. But then there are Scrubs, how I met your mother, the bin bang theory and supernatural that you could watch.

Criminal Minds and Scrubs are funnily enough on Disney+ as well. Weird how these streaming services overlap nowadays.
Supernatural is currently NOT available on prime. I know because I want to watch the last seasons... and was in the middle of a re-watch when they took it off last year.
What I'm watching right now is:
- Without Remorse (based on the Tom Clancy book) - about John Clarke. I didn't realise until I saw a review on Youtube. What I've seen so far, it's pretty decent. BUT a couple of characters are badly miscast. Ritter needs to NOT be Jamie Bell, he's not tough enough. I preferred the Ritter in Clear and Present Danger, that guy was ruthless. I can't take Jamie Bell's character as a serious villain, he can't pull it off. Neither is his commander, I don't think that character is from the book... I don't recall Greer having a niece... and I've read the Jack Ryan books... not Without Remorse though. She does not look like a tough SEALs commander to me. Other than that, it's alright 1 hour in. Better than Shadow Recruit.
- The Final Days - think it's a 4K transfer of an old film - about Nixon's last days
- Hannibal is really interesting as well... I quit on Season 3 episode 2 a while back... but need to finish the series at some point. Mads makes a very intimidating villain/anti-hero. I NEED to see him lose... he's winning to much so far!
- Invincible - I've seen up to episode 3... worth a watch, that's all I'm going to say. No spoilers.
