Yes,it is IMHO. Its a very British type of comedy though and rather silly.
The original was funny, the later series were, frankly, dire. the special recently released seems to have recaptured some of the old magic.
I love my SciFi, but RD never caught my imagination. Maybe I missed S1 but I thought occassional inspired, but mostly silly.
I bit like Monty Python. Though I'd bet I remember the really great bits and have filed therest of the dross in my mental big round filing cabinet.
Really great sci-fi? The original radio version of HGTTG .... the TV version of which I thought was rubbish.
The early series were very good, and highly quoted in my circles. But they didn't know when to stop.
If you like reading, the books are awesome. One of the writers also went on to write https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incompetence_(novel) which is brilliant.
I've just seen that its on netflix so might as well give it a go. I'm a bit of a completionist when it comes to shows etc so will have to watch them all once I start lol.Thank for the input guys
Good luck! I loved the first 2 series above all else, my family prefer 3-5.
I'm a completionist in the same way so have had exactly the same process through the series - do come back and let us know when you're beginning to regret still watching! ;)
I hope you don't have any Smeg appliances. You won't look at them in quite the same way afterwards.
I've seen the first two episodes and did enjoy it. One thing I kinda expected was not getting some of the slang(Im in my early 20s please forgive me lol) but hearing climate change references was kinda surprising. I think my favourite character was the funny ai computer lol.
The problem was IIRC Craig Charles got banged-up for a bit and the show lost its momentum, then Chris Barrie didn't want to rejoin and so they got Chloe Annette for series 7 and the whole thing sucked. Grant & Naylor stopped writing as a pair and well...
Some of the most recent series has been ok tbh and more like the old stuff but there is some real garbage between series 6 and whatever the more recent series worth watching are (sorry I can't recall as Dave+my EPG doesn't exactly say).
Watched the recent feature length. It's ok, some funny parody moments, but not altogether worth it IMO. Left me thinking it could have been better done as a mini-series in shorter chunks. But hey, some good lighthearted banter for lockdown. It did however miss Scutters, the talkie toaster and a few other key bits of Dwarf trope that you'd expect to make it in there.
Love it, from seasons 1-5, 6 I felt was a bit hit and miss as were the seasons that followed but still worth watching.
Back to Earth I felt was average at best but the 3 seasons that followed I felt captured the original seasons well and the feature length special The Promised Land that was on last week was really good and currently available on UKTV Play but make sure you see the episode Waiting for God before watching it
well you would say that - you're one of the Ferrals after all ;)
Our technician is in her early twenties and a bit of a film buff. It's quite scary when I refer to some iconic film and then realise it came out before she was born. Re-makes and re-boots are the worse, I can be raving about some movie, she tells me it's rubbish, then work out we are talking about different films.
My golden rule with BBC Sci-Fi is when the scenery stops moving, the series is about to go downhill.
I think netflix has all 8 or 9 seasons. So I should see them all in the next week or so.
Yes was 8 years ago believe it or not. I liked it :

I'd say no - but the book is brilliant. "Dead Dave all they're"
Ahh but you will never see the original Total Recall in the context it was made. When you strip away the cheesy lines and dodgy effects, and remember it was a good decade pre The Matrix, the Sci-Fi underneath was pretty original stuff in the day. The new one is all production values and GFX and takes itself way too seriously, IMO.
On the other hand. The stripped back Dredd (2012) is a much better rendition than Judge Dredd (1995), which got the visuals right and ruined it by plonking the baffoonish Stallone in the middle. (I'm old enough to have bought 2000AD Prog 1 at the local newsagent.)
If you like old sci-fi and the environment, check out Silent Running (1970) and see just how little progress we have made in 50 years.
The Red Dwarf book is OK but not great IMO. Grant / Naylor were a great script writing team but not really up to novels. A little extra detail in the back stories but pretty sure they covered it all, and changed some of it, several times, by the end of the TV series.
YMMV.
I liked it. It is definitely worth watching and the comedy was good.
I just watched the episode where the ai computer tricks the people into thinking he's an idiot with an iq of 6. I could not stop laughing at the end.
As I'm watching more and more episodes; it's the theme song that makes the show seem the more dated than anything else.
This show is a classic. The ep 'Back to reality' was on the other day :clapping:
I've seen all 8 and enjoyed them quite a lot. The only episode I didn't like was the one where rimmer stole listers body. I think I may get the blu rays for the newer seasons.
As well as the all-important strength of the characters, one of the chief things that makes Red Dwarf so phenomenal is that it's unique. While it draws on both science fiction and comedy traditions, the resulting combination is an entirely fresh take on both fields.
Red Dwarf is amazing !
Brilliant characters and writing...
The comedy has aged as you'd expect, but it's still very funny. It's a comedy set in space, it's just the background for some silly stories. Some classic lines which will have you laughing out loud.
I enjoyed it very much and so did my gf.
Even if dated, classics are still classics and you can't beat a well thought-out story.
