Even the extended editions miss out quite a few parts of the original books. It's probably not all that surprising though, the books are very long and go into a great deal of detail regarding the lore of Middle Earth. I bought the extended editions of the films on DVD, but I must admit, I've only watched them once! In fact, I'd be lying if I said I could remember exactly what happened in those extra scenes! That said, the film trilogy is very well done, especially if you're fortunate enough to have a home projector & 5.1 audio system! There are some scenes that will really give your subwoofer a good workout, and the score is beautiful.

I rewatched the lord of the rings this christmas ... and Ive never seen the extended versions ... It was like watching a whole new series - lots of stuff that was not in there before. Really cool! Highly recommended. Felt like an extra hour per movie.

I've watched this trilogy almost religiously every year since 2004. I've YET to get my girlfriend to watch it with me, i've begged and begged her but she says they're "too long". THE DISRESPECT!?

Yep, I agree entirely. Splitting what is actually quite a short book (well, short in comparison to TLOTR) across three films just felt like a shameless money-grab.

So has anyone seen the new 4k releases? Any good? I'm not minded to get them any time soon, but I probably will at some point.

Didn't know they were filmed well enough to carry 4k.

This article discuses the film quality of both LOTR and TH. Both are really very good quality, apparently...

Sure that's the right link? I seem to be reading an article about someone enthusing about film projection for aesthetic reasons rather than quality (eg even though hobbit shot digitally, they preferred the feeling they got from watching a digital to film print and then projected from that film, which would be a loss of quality).

It does mention the quality of the film image for LOTR, but yes does focus on the Hobbit & its digital format. Anyway, I think the answer to Zaz's question is that yes, the LOTR are good enough quality to merit a 4K release

I've seen the LOTR tribology and while I was impressed I most certainly did not come away thinking "the way to improve those movies would be to make them longer."
