I've never seen this myself, but get the impression I perhaps should have...
It seems there's a 26-episode animated series, plus a movie to watch - Are there any other spin-offs and things I should 'experience' before giving the Netflix version a try?

Aaaaaaand it's canceled. Honestly, live-action adaptations of anime never seem to work out. Why do studios even bother anymore? I don't see the point when there's no way you can get close to the original.
I loved the original Anime so was very unsure going into it. I'm a couple of episodes in and not convinced so far.
I'm not surprised it has been cancelled already it seems like as you get so much data feedback on the platforms they can see if its not doing the numbers they expected and then not carry on with it.
