Independence Day was a pale rip off of the story... the story is over 100 years old (written in 1898) and is one of the most copied formats ever.

Which again is rather the point... the big scarey monsters being defeated by little bugs...

You mean Halflife copied an idea which is over 100 years old as well?

Except for taking it out of the time period - which made the aliens more of a threat... I mean taking on the War Machines with only cannons is rather more daunting than modern weaponary....

It is not a soundtrack - it is a musical... and more accurately of the original novel.

In fact, it is apparently being made into an animated movie soon as well.

recenlty listened to the Orson Wells broadcast... that was pretty scarey stuff for the time..!

For those who don't know - this caused a major panic in the USA when it was broadcast in the 1950's - as many thought it was an actual invasion. This was helped as they presented the show as news-style broadcasts...

Was this the equivilent of the Artillary man (played by David Essex in the musical)?

I must say that the original setting would have made more impact... I think I'll stick to the book and musical ... until the animated one appears (although there was a 1880's set low-budget version released recently, which didn't do so well due to lack of money for effects)

Anyone know where I can find this on the internet? I've heard about it for many years, but to my knowledge, have never heard it.

I thought the movie was above average, but actually quite good if you link it to the origional plot.

The UK film didn't have the budget or effects or time to replicate the story close enough to the novel (no tripod machines etc) but it actually spun off an average USA tv series which followed the same theme of the plot after the alien (who the government stored in barrels) managed to over come the germs.

this new film pretty much emboided what the film should have been like many years ago following the plot almost spot on (except the burying of the tripods many years ago ??? - no idea why the did that). The fact that it was set in the states was a bit of a kick in the teeth, but I thought it was quite well done. The tripod ships in my mind where a good representation of the story, and the bit with the camera/snake coming into the house was straight out of the origional movie and quite well done.

although it didn't set the world alight, this film was well worth watching to see what they did with it.

    As for jonneymendoza

i dont wanna listen 2 some musical soundtrack of wotw!! what kind of madness is that!!!
you certainly are not old enough to remember this, despite calling people "son" as this was a big thing when it came out, and is far more than a soundtrack but a really good musical that tells the story, really well. Put your ear phones in, close your eyes, and listen - you'll almost picture it
    It is Inevitable.....

Yeah, its not just a sountrack, it has songs representing all the destruction and despair (bit with the boat Thunderchild getting sunk is really dramatic, as is the track on it Dawn of War I think its called). It also has talkie parts telling you about what is going on which leads it along nicely.

Its one of those things that demands listening to, its absolutely superb, I heard it for the first time when i was around 12 (I'm 32 on Sunday) and loved it ever since.

"Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us."

Oh yeah. Vast intellects. Slowly and surely drawn up plans. Yet they still didn't plan for the possibility of disease. Stupid aliens!

I remember the WOTW record, listened to it quite a few times as a kid. The narrator had a great voice (Richard Burton, or a soundalike?) and the music was quite sinister sounding, it worked really well.

poor poor jonneymendoza showing his lack of appriciation of a classic.
you must be an mid/late 80's child at a guess

OK the new versions hyped, and has a few gimicks in to show case some special effects and the like. Its been hacked and slashed, however the story remains true (bar a few diverts) and is a classic.

I can't see the film retaining its popularity as long as the original novel.
