Jonny Bendover........a message for you yound fella m' laddo.

The story, which you attempt to knock for being "crap" is actually quite good. By all means knock the film, and I suggest you don't purchase it with your own hard earned cash. Sadly I feel you might have missed the depth here. I#d imflate you an arm band, and pass it to you, but I feel you may swallow it, taking it for a large marsh mallow.

Father Smurf. Welcome. I don't know who you are, but you are welcome.

And you Hexus regulars. Well done for holding back on Jonny Bulldozer. He deserved re educating, but I must admit.....you all did well to keep so calm

saw it on Saturday, felt it was good. Suspense was good, loved the visualisation of the tripods, and they are much more true to the book than the classic version of the movie.

I think the whole thing about explaining the situation is that no-one knew what was really happening. Hence why no explination was possible. Suprised they didn't use the nuke scene from the classic tho... especially focusing on the american perspective heh.

Tho i'd have liked the son to have died. Miranda Otto being pregnant was sooo odd, where was her sword hehe

They could have used the same idea for the ending, and perhaps made it a bit clearer perhaps...

the film does move fast, but I think the ending is explained enough.

I personally believe that this films majority target audience are people who know the story and the earliy film/musical/radio broadcast who are eager to see how the remake has gone, possibly in a similar way that the startwars films biggest audience where people who saw the origional ones.
    It is Inevitable.....

Gotta say i didnt like the movie.

I've read - and loved - the book, and I actaully own the musical on LP and both are miles better than this film.

As expected, tom cruise was great and I think he fitted the role well; the SFX were ofc this being a big budget movie amazing. There was tension throughout, and enough twists and turns to keep things moving..just

What it lacked was a decent diagloue and interepretation of the story. I havnt seen the original film so can;t compare to that, and I know that you can't have the whole book on film as it would last hours and hours, but they could have done a bit better at least. No real character development and probably hundreds of plot holes if you look for them - 99% of them not related to the book, eg issues with the EMP as already mentioned, no explanation of what happened to the son, people surviving impossible situations, the lack of sucktion from the ship as it sank (which would normally kill everyone in a few hundred metres), and i'm sure there are many more which i cant remember off hand - sure i noticed more in the cinema though.

hmm it just left me feeling empty and rushed - the ending was fine although it seemed like more happened in those 5 mins than in the rest of the film....

As an OT footnote, jonney - not being intentionaly rude, but take a look at http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/ , you might find it interesting

I loved the film - first in a while that really made me think *crap the human race is not going to make it* - and I knew how it ended!

The tripods really did look the part... absolutely merciless and definitely hit the note. There were a few plot holes - like how on earth could these things be underground for millions of years all over the world, and no builder ever found them? No earthquake unearthed them? Don't tell me they were too deep... would have been a nightmare trying to get out of there...

Can't wait for the sequel... apparently they come back, but this time they've got... hankerchiefs...

This may seem like a tangent, but has anyone seen "2001: a space oddessy" the TV show? well in 1 of the episodes, the captain and 2 other people get transported back to earth, but end up in the 15th century in scotland or something. Anyway, as they've been breathing bacteria free air for the last 5 years or something, they dont have any resistance to the bacteria and one of them gets very very ill and almost dies. (all from my 8yr old memory, so some things may be wrong)

I assume a race of beings who have had the ability of inter-stellar travel for millions of years are going to have wiped out all HARMFUL bacteria a very long time ago, and over time they have forgotton that HARMFUL bacteria even exist. They see earth, and the only thing that can cause them problems is humans, why study anything other than humans then? and why look for HARMFUL bacteria if you dont even know of its existance?

Another point raised by my dad, why be a tripod? and why have a driver when you could control it from space? Well a tripod is very stable, the legs can step over things easily and its less legs to control than 4 or more. Any driver would have a lag time in transmission of data, through reaction and finally lag for command back to the robot. We also saw that the aliens wanted to look around (the basement for instance). Another point is the aliens would almost definatly have to use electromagnetic waves (like radio) to control the robots, which humans have no trouble in blocking, rendering the attack force useless.

The red spraying was blood and seeds. Cows blood used to be used by farmers to fertilise fields because of its high iron and other minerals content. It was stopped by the EU due to BSE.

The only things i cant explain is why the hell the aliens didn't understand mirrors. The aliens looked in awe at that mirror in the basement for about a minute. The other thing is why the shield went down when the aliens got sick.

edit: you can read the book HERE

    i thought it was good
I remember bits of the original film.. the tripod things and the "foghorn" noise they made.. that really runs thru you in a big cinema..
The special effects were great too, the missus didnt like it at all... she was scared stupid!.
as for the ending.. well i agree, it did suck.. but that didnt matter, coz with it being a spielberg film.. would you expect anything different?!
