I think the option of both is a good idea, as sometimes dubbing is very good although sometimes its terrible, so an option for both is a good idea IMO.

i have a strong hatred of dubbing, being a film student who hates the fact that america and english language dominates the global film industry. yes sometimes it is well done but not often and mostly you just lose a lot of the emotion and direction of peoples words.

I have never enjoyed a film that has been dubbed- whereas I don't think watching a subtitled film takes anything away from the film at all.

The first date I went on with my (now) wife was to take her to see Sur Mes Levres- sophisticated, that I am.

    Subs.

But when I was showing my mate amelie, his parents decided to watch it too and his little brother (who I was against watching it cos of some of the adult themes and the next fact couldn't read the subs. So it had to be put on dubs and the film lost all its quirkyness.

Has to be subtitless, always find when itss dubbed the bad guy has a squeeky voice, the good guy sounds like Syvester Stallon all the time and eeveryne has these fake put on laughs. I prefer the subs, especially on Chinese movies, helps me learn the language

subs ofc, dubbing is always terrible...

Just imagine Battle Royale with dubbing, would totally ruin it.

best example is with anime - Watching Tokyo: Bubblegum crisis with dubbing is funny but in the wrong way - your laughing at the terrible american voices (especially leon's 'I want some cawfee' new york accent...hes japaneese ffs).

Dont ruin the experience with dubbing, stick to the subs. you dont notice them anyway after a few mins

I said subtitles, although some films are hilarious due to their dubbing! Anyway, as said, if you dub, you lose the emotion of the film.

Subtitles for me too. Language converys emotions, but also conveys pace, tempo and a much more human instinct.

I love listening to chinese/japanese films for the eloquance of the language, Italian films for the passion and traits of being italian.

Plus for whatever reason i find that Subtitles tends to distort the meaning of the phrases less than the dubbing does.

Don't ask me why, as they should be the same, but dubbing always tends to use shorter/common use words where subtitles are done by more exact translations....

Martial arts films are always better subtitled. Also nice to watch dubbed sometimes as you enjoy the film in a different way(might be funnier etc)
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Dubbing, can't watch the film if you're watching the subtitles

I went to see Hero and came out having no idea what i saw, just the text

i think this is a learning thing, the more subtitles you watch the more used to it you get and it has no effect, although occasionaly you do miss things. most of the films i have to watch have subtitles so im completely used to them, infact ive basically learnt french form watching so many french films.

from what i remember of Hero there wasnt that much dialogue anyway.

Battle Royal with dubbing would be rubbish, but with subs its great. The same applies to every other foreign language film I have watched.

Unless it is a cartoon dubbing just doesn't work very well imo.
