    Classical Recomendations

Basically I'm fed up of spending my mornings at the gym listening to my usual mix of punk/hardcore/metal/dance/hip hop. I fancy some classical music to inspire me to greatness before I start work. Any suggestions?

Well, BBC Radio 3 gave away Beethoven recordings by their Philharmonic Orchestra a while back. I couldn't find the site in Google though, but its definately worth looking into

    IMO you want:

    William Tell Overture - Rossini
Dance in the Hall of the Mountain Kings - Greig (last movement of the Peer Gynt suite)
    Zadok The Priest - Handel
Pomp And Cirumstance Marches Nos 1 and 4 (think these are the good ones, can't be bothered to bust out the LP and check)

The openings of the following are quite cool:

Gloria - Vivaldi (this is good most of the way through, espcially Laudaumus Te, Domine Fili Unigenite, and Cum Sancto Spirito- can you tell I've both sung and played this? )
    40th Symphony - Mozart
    Carmina Burana - Orff

I was going to recommend one of the pieces from Shostakovich's Jazz Suite No.2 too but I can't find a preview online to tell me which bit it is. Anyway, suffice it to say that it has a trumpet part that makes every hair on my body stand on end. I used to play the viola, and hence was always sat right in front of the trumpet section; usually it was a bit of a pain as you couldn't hear yourself but for this piece I had by far the best seat in the house.

This thread has made me think that I really ought to make a lot more effort to rediscover classical music. I grew up with it; pop was effectively banned in my house when I was a kid thanks to my dad. The first pop album I ever got was Bad and I had to get special Permission to go and buy that. Goodness knows why- in his old age the silly sod listens to all sorts, he even likes Muse apparently. Anyway, I kind of threw the baby out with the bath water when I was finally allowed to listen to pop/rock, which in hindsight was a bit daft..
