Were Queen the best rock band ever?

Just listened to their hits and I gotta say, no other artist makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck like these guys songs do.

Each song is unique and fantastic in a different way.

Yes is the short answer. The crowds they played to will never be matched by any band around today, their music appealed across an immensely broad spectrum of society (which is rare) and the music was just damn good!

I think they are up there. I love a hell of a lot of their songs. I don't think the greatest tho - but depends on whether you call the Beatles Rock (I do) and of course - The who are great

They are truly great - one of my biggest regrets is not going to see them play in Wembley

You have to look at the way the world has changed since Queen were an influence though.

Well, ok, they still are an influnce but bands today can come from nowhere due to MySpace which means that every week we are bombarded with the newest greatest band on earth and it changes every week, people have access to music in a way that they never had before but still bands like Queen, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and artists like Jimi Hendrix are still high on everyones lists of influences.

Queen were and are great, but my vote for greatest has to go to Led Zeppelin.

It's a close call TBH, but I don't find Led Zep's lyrics to be that great, and musically I think Queen are better too... but I still find myself more drawn to Led Zepplin's music for good Rock. Especially as a drummer - Bonham was genius, I love playing Good Times Bad Times, and moby dick .... *goes into trance*

TBH I wouldn't want to make a call.

The x versus y debate can go on for ever.

However one thing that cannot be debated is Freddie Mercurys' ability to convey emotion and feeling with his voice. I read somewehere that he had the most versatile voice (in terms of vocal range) of any mainstream singer.

The fact that he died an untimely death has ensured that he will forever be immortalised - in the same way as John Bonham, Jimmi Hendrix, Keith Moon.
But possibly more deserved, especially the way he fought it till right at the end - listen to 'the show must go on' and remember that that performance was recorded whilst he was terminally ill and very sick - absolutley stunning.

When it comes to 'rock', ive always been on the side of Pink Floyd to be honest, everytime I listen to them, I just fall in love with the sound. So much meaning behind their music and it just makes me feel like no other band does.

Queen are up there though, no doubt.

Pouring petrol on the fire - what about Status Quo? Now there's a good band. (ducks under cover)
