    Casino Royale

Well, as a steadfast disliker of all recent James Bond films, I gotta say, this is even better than the hype

And the hype is really quite, well....hyper.

James Bond has been reinvented, for this, the first novel, and his primary official mission as a "double Oh" agent, and this film is the absolute total reinvention. The post-Bourne Identity viewing public needed something new, and frankly Casino Royale will pack the cinema's.

We start with NO BOND MUSIC...no sir, this new secret agent doesn't even have his licence to kill yet, and the intro is created with class and color and very good music.

Then it lands running with a flick back and forth across the globe to unfold a storyline for the rest of your viewing pleasures, and pleasures they are sure to be.

Cheese? Just how cheesey is it? Is it still sponsored by a West Country Gorge with a fetish for rennet and milk? Well......maybe a little, but this Bond gets beaten up, badly, and brilliantly and while he does well, and naturally survives, is is SUCH A CLOSE THING.

He's got very little real style, he needs help in dressing for a proper formal occassion and he end's up being tortured (oh BOY is he tortured)

He's close to death in places, and the man's face is fantastic, the film work and the tension had me running my hands through my hair, worried that it was going to be the last film!

OK, there's some bad moments. They are tiny, and I've only seen it once, but who ever thought that the mud on the Land Rovers in the jungle looked real, needs slapping. And I do NOT need someone to explain every deal of a hand of cards, through a very tense part of bluffing by our new super-spy, because I can work it our now, thanks very much, shut up.

But those are minor points, minimal.

And only a reasonably experienced player of 1st person shooter PC games will see the beauty of some of Bond's bullet shots, but suffice it to say, he uses the environment very well, as did the director!

    And James, dear James......has a heart. Which is.....well, I won't spoil it.

Worth seeing as a Bond fan? Yeah...go see what it should have been about for the last umpteen bags-of-crap-Bond-films.

Worth seeing as an Action film fan. Oh yes.

Worth convincing your partner, who's not really interested in James Bond. Definately. It's this market where the extra ticket sales are going to pile up.

James Bond is now cool. It's just a shame they insist of shining a blue LED in his eyes to make them twinkle

Yeah, I really enjoyed it. They needed to reinvent themsevles after the Bourne films, and having watched the Bourne Identity in HD on Sunday, the day after seeing casino Royale, I can safely say that it knocks 7 shades out of Bourne.

I think I dentity and Supremacy anre great, that they've really amped up the style of film for CR, and they've done it well. There were a few odd moments, and horrible product placement (but what doesn't have that these days?), but overall, it was superb. I could watch it again in a flash.

I loved the contrast of the chase scene in Madagascar - the target using his dexterity to make a daring escape through a busy building site, with Bond using spatial awareness and brute force in place of that dexterity - so well done.

Terrible intro music by Chris Cornell though. The Bourne Ultimatum is gonna have to do something special to improve on this.

That was an awesome start to the film. But it was needed. And it did set a good pace for the film.

I personally prefer the bourne films, but agree that with that sort of thing out there, it has helped to kkick James Bond into life and make it more of an action ./ spy film in keeping with todays times.

I saw it tonight and I must admit, it wasn't really my cup of tea.

I'm a Bond fan of old and although I understand the need for change and would even admit that Bond has perhaps taken steps in the right direction in this movie, it just wasn't for me.

It was a good movie, but it wasn't what I personally want in a Bond movie. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the old stuff but I love the daring gadgets, the girls in the opening credits, the great song, the cliched lines.

Some very interesting stuff happened to Bond in this movie, but "this never happened to the other fellow".

I too enjoyed the movie it seemed more real that the others, not too much exploading and stuff like that . And hey, even the bond girl showed feelings..that was something different + I love Eva Green. She was also awsome in Kingdom of Heaven.

I usually don't like Bond movies very much, but this was good. And I love the first scene when there's the chasing! God, it was cool.

Sorry if I'm a bit late but I only just discovered this forum .

There was no Q... its not a bond movie. And was it me or did they use the same car that they used last time?

I was a bit confused at the end. I think it was M all along but nobody seems to agree.
    With love and many thanks,

    Melons

There wont be a Q - Desmond Lleywellyn (sp) is dead - hence 'R' ( John Cleese ) as the new boy. Its all in 'The world is not enough '

actually it was a very dignified exit - Q gives Bond 2 bits of advice , ' Never let them see you bleed and always have an escape route' Then disappears through a trapdoor.

    **Possible SPOILERS Hidden**

As stated above this film is fantastic in its own right - if it wasnt a bond film and was named something else then it would still be a great spy thriller. For those that have watched it, I liked the way that there were deefinite signals to everyone that this isnt like any bond film before.

As mentioned above the titles were a start - there was a bloke singing them for a start, and did anyone notice that there was a naked woman silhouette anywhere.

They definitely painted a better picture, a more realistic one of bond too, to try and makhim more believeable. No more punching one bad guy once and having them roll out of the way, the fights in this film are decent. Also, he kinda gets battered sometimes, which is good to see, as in all the others he is kinda invincible, you know, like his hair would never budge.

I also noticed one or two toungue in cheek in jokes. They might be spoilers so you will have to highlight them to see:

    1) Notice the way that instead of a beautiful woman in the the "Gleaming-out-of the-sea" shot, its HIM that is shown coming out of the water.

    2) Also, the best line of the film is when Bond asks for a Vodka Martini and then the bartender asks "Shaken or Stirred?" to which he replied "Do I look like I care?"

    3) When he gets into the Aston Martin for the chase at the end - this is a usual staple of bond films, and I was expecting a big chase - then he flips it in about 5 seconds.

All those points seem to say "I DONT want to be like the films before me" and for me its better for it. I can take i seriously now (Which i never thought I'd say after the 'invisible Aston' of the last film).

Coupled with the visceral violence, which makes bond out to be a different Bond, one who actually seems tough enough to be someone who does all the things he does, and I think that this adds up to a great film, one that was great start to finish.

Go see it (if its still on) or get that DVD on pre-order!!!

    Right, back to work...

Am I the one of the only people who really didn't like this film as a Bond film?

Daniel Craig is a great actor (as shown by his amazing performance in Layer Cake) but as bond? He just doesn't fit the profile.

I know that this is technically set before all the others, which is supposed to explain why he plays the character so differently to the other bonds, but I just didn't like it, it wasn't a bond film, and was much more of a generic spy/action film.

The fact that there were more plot holes and continutity errors than every other bond film combined didn't help much either - the worse of couse being that dame judy dench was still playing M - which can't be explained away in any way in the bond universe (the real world reason being her contract of course)..meh I just didn't like it, and I really hope that the next one is better.
