ISP - Who is good now ?

I am looking for a broadband connection - but cant have a 12 month contract. Maximum 6 months.

Also need downloads to be unlimited without throttling.

Are there any of these around ?

I looked at Bulldog, Pipex - both have 12m contracts.

I think that you will find most ISPs to have 12 month contracts. Bulldog & Pipex are basically the same people now. Pipex brought Bulldog from C&W about September last year.

Virgin used to offer a no contract BB service not sure what it provided or if they still offer it now with them merging with NTL & Telewest.

Nope, was just looking through their terms and condiitions before and it appears that if you cancel within 12 months, you WILL have to pay out the remaining of the minimum contract!

check eclipse, they never used to tie you down to 12 months, not sure about now... also pretty good, but if you don't stay with em 12 months you won't get your free modem (woooo....)

The best ISP's at the moment are Zen, IDnet, Newnet and Entanet resellers. I think they all have caps but i'm sure they all do 1 month contracts.

Unless you pay the premium for uncapped services they will all have some kind of peak time allowance and fair usage policy.

Entanet resellers get decent recomendations from a lot of their customers. They do several allowance packages, for £20 you can get 30GB peak, 300GB off peak though they have instigated throttling but not in the utilitarian manner that most do.

Graham is right. I use adsl 24 for that exact package for £19.99/month. Their contract is monthly.

Zen are getting back to their best now(I should know I work for them)

We had a bit of problems last year where we grew too much without having the staff to deal with it but we are getting back on top of things now)

Zen is still 1 month contracts but is capped.

Caps are a necessary evil nowadays unfortunatly. Because of the price of the BT centrals if services wherent capped then the ISP can lose thousands per line a month.

Be there are getting very good reviews and excellent speeds with two packages of £14 and £24 per month for 4GB limit and unlimited respectively. Email due to be added soon for £2 per month extra.

Eclipse look like the perfect deal right now. Month by month contract, 20gb fair use during peak hours, unlimited off peak, upto 8mb and £14.99pm on BT line (Total = £25.99pm).

Setup a linux router + download box to schedule all non-urgent downloads to off-peak hours, and maybe limited downloads during peak time.

except that they throttle p2p 24/7 and some days you'l be lucky to hit 30KB/s at 4 am , plus depending on what gateways you get hooked up to, you may also get poor pings and packet loss

I am on bulldog and I thought they were pretty good as I've had no issues regarding line speeds and download speed but last week I had the unfortunate opportunity to speak to them regarding my line.

They cut the connection off and basically it just connects and goes to a bulldog " you are not on the PAYG service " screen and then directs you to their portal.

Anyway, to cut a long story short - LAST MONDAY they sorted out what was a billing issue at their end. Anyway I sat there and was polite as I know what it's like working in a call-centre. While chatting I asked them for the MAC code as well as I'm looking for a faster line i.e ADSL2+ from Be. To try and keep my custom they stated they would give me 8 Mb this months to test and see how it was.

I then got told they would take 3 days to put my service back on.

This was last monday. It's now taken 7 days for them to do a simple account reactive command to their system and I STILL cannot gain access to the internet at home.

If you've got a good line on bulldog then the service is great, but it's their billing and CS departments where they are lacking completely.
