    bthome hub

    hello,
i got my bt home hub today i plugged it in waited for an hour for the line check then plugged in via ethernet.
it was detected but it wouldnt load any websites.
so i installed the usb drivers that i downloaded earlier.
its only showing 2.3mbps but i should be receiving more.
i dont know if this is because im using usb or what.
if you can help me use the ethernet connection rather than the usb it would be helpful.
ok i added lodore as a admim user with the password as lodore then change the password to something hard to crack and deleted the username admin with password admin account.
so atm ive using usb at 2.6mb which is still quite slow

since the ethernet never worked to well with the by voyager 2091 router hence why i used usb2.0 for it.
but i really would prefer to use Ethernet as the connection. in the networking connections when i use ethernet it all shows as connected but i cant load any web pages. I cant even load the router config page using the Ethernet connection. i read on another forum that it might give the default gateway during the install cd.
i didn't use the install cd since it installs tons of crappy yahoo software i dont want.
i will check with ipconfig tonight to see if it has a default gateway when using the ethernet connection.

    thanks in advance
    lodore

I'm guessing it could be the USB connection.

Remember to check if any firewall software is blocking website access, by not recognising the hub - I had a few headaches with that as well

i will check the settings tonight.
it should of updated itself to the latest firmware by now.
if i cant get the ethernet to work i will keep using the usb connection.
lets hope i can get more than 2.6mb connection speed with the usb connection

I have a Bt home hub worked fine from the box, I would uninstall and start agian using ethernet. follow the instructions from start to finish and you should not have a problem, eg

set up hub connection no cables to PC, wait for broadband light to become stable then simply put int he cd provided and follow instuctions from there on dont try to force your own drivers off the internet, you can update these later.

firmware for the hub will automatically update as BT do this once they have recognised your connection (2-3 days all lights on hub will flash together) do not turn the hub off whilst this is happening or you will have to reload the basic firmware off the disc manually (like me oops)

the thing is i didnt use the cd because i dont want bt yahoo toolbar,bt yahoo messenger or bt yahoo browser. also i dont want bt yahoo browser to be default. last time i used a bt cd to install with ethernet it didnt work eiether and i reverted back to usb. even thou usb isnt meant to be reliable its more reliable than my ethernet port.
for usb drivers i got them from the bt site in tittled Latest drivers for bt devices.
I read the readme and followed it down to the wire.
create a folder on the desktop extract the drivers to that folder. plug in to USB select advanced and tell it to look in the folder you extracted the the drivers to and now the usb works.
    what does the cd do?
i know it installs the crap yahoo software i listed above and creates a few shortcuts euch as the bt phone one for setting up a normal phone as a voip phone dont need since i folllowed the instructions in the manual and typed in www.bt.com.bbv and typed in the phonenumber and password and the phone works.
does the cd setup the ethernet in anyway? if so how?

You can custom install and not install all of the programs. the cd will set up the ethernet port on your pc hence the problems you are having. I would try this as you can setup your default browser easily

I had a look on my Hub, wanted to use OpenDNS also, I couldn't find a menu entry for it.

I shall telnet in later and see if I can set it up from there, I shall let you know how I get on

Well, my homehub now has OpenDNS' servers listed as its DNS servers, but the OpenDNS test page still says i'm not using OpenDNS, I shall reboot the device and see if it works then

Right, a reboot of this machine later and its working

    Heres how I did it;

Telnet into the Home Hub, by opening a command prompt and typing "telnet 192.168.1.254" and logging in using you admin account (being either the default one, or one you created).

Right, now at the prompt you are at, type dns, hit enter, type server, hit enter, type route, and hit enter - navigating down the menu tree to get to the menu you want.

    Now to add the DNS addresses;
    - type 'add'
    - at "dns = " type 208.67.222.222"
    - at "src = " type the IP address of your machine (assuming you have a static IP) - I guess you could set it up for the whole IP range by entering 192.168.1.255 (I think its 255, or 0 - one of the two, i cant quite remember atm)
    - at "srcmask = " type "255.255.255.0" assuming that is the subnet mask you are using
    - domain, metric and intf, i'm not sure about the setup of those, but i left 'em blank and after a reboot I'm OpenDNS-ing away, so it seems to work without any entry for them.

repeat the above process but with 208.67.222.220 instead of .222 to add the secondary server.

To check the servers have been added correctly, go to the Home Hub web interface, and navigate to the 'internet services' page (Advanced -> Broadband -> Internet Services) and click on View More, the OpenDNS servers should be set as your Primary and Secondary DNS.

Reboot your machine and you should be good to go
