Re: Your broadband speed - post here

Thanks a lot Dareos, I've followed your instructions and think I may have found some problems, but I don't fully understand what the problem might be so I've taken print screens of the following...

I turned off the laptops in the house and made sure my PC was the only thing running on my network, to try and rule out any accesses from other PCs skewing the results. I also shut down all programs that I could that would access the network.

this will ping the bbc 20 times and give you results, you are really looking for an average below 30ms or so, any spikes over 100ms indicates an issues

As you can see here, 19 of the 20 results are between 23ms and 29ms, which is absolutely fine, but there's a spike of 99ms on the 5th ping.

As you can see here, they're all <1ms apart from one, where it spikes to 6ms, again, no idea why this might be.

And here, there's 3 * showing timeouts, as you said, but what exactly does that mean? Is that anything to do with my computer or is that a problem with my ISP?

Re: Your broadband speed - post here

Might be better with a new thread for this mate, as its not a troubleshooting thread.. but...

run that tracert a few times, see if its always on the same hop that you are finding the issue.

I wouldnt worry too much about the 6ms or the 99ms ping, 1 out of 20 spiking isnt in itself indicative of a major problem, those timeouts may well be tho. The first hop past the router is more than likely the exchange, so might be a BT issue, might be an ISP issue, call your isp and show them the results.

Lol sorry! I am with Virgin BB.

I was with various ADSL isps in the past, and NTL some years ago (who at the time had rubbish customer service) Went back to rebranded Virgin around 3 years ago, and haven't looked back.

I remember being with Plusnet, who at the time advertised 'unlimited downloads' so I signed up.
3 weeks later, they changed their terms and conditions, to cap/limit downloads by a hell of a lot.

When I, and loads of other fedup customers complained, they said it was in the small print that they could change their T&C whenever they liked.

I was stuck with them for a year
