I had the same thing, no matter what I changed the router would not connect over 8 meg so I took it back to the shop
As soon as they replaced it boom 120 again
I would hazard a guess you have a duff router there.
I have the usual 8 MBit connection with around 20 ms ping.
though the 0ms of the previous posting ping is mighty impressive
Bit better than usual at the moment, but they've started converting the local cabs to fibre, so hopefully I'll be able to get into the fast lane soon

There was recently a bit of fuss here after Stephen Fry tweeted about the rubbish internet service. I don't know what the fuss was about because he was absolutely right. ISPs in New Zealand don't mention speeds at all and sell contracts based on data allowances. I think Fry uploaded a few videos and was throttled to dial up speeds. Our package is NZ$65 (£34) a month for 60GB of data. I've had to download loads of stuff to a new laptop, which is bringing me close to the cap. I'll have to either make do with 13GB to last 2 weeks or spend an extra $30 to double the data cap. I've got loads of stuff to download yet, so I may have to go with that. The speed is fine but the data caps are archaic.
Surely they could spend the money on a modern infrastructure for the biggest cities. Auckland has 1.25m people, then the next 5 biggest are 200-350,000. That seems like enough of a customer base to justify the cost, at least in Auckland.
@Kid, are you saying that New Zealand is good because it doesnt have speed values it just gives you a data limit? Or do you mean its bad ?
Id say 12Mb/s and 1Mb/s upload is pretty dire for £34 p/m, this is my current connection:
Pretty close to yours (pings gone worse, used to stick around 15ms ), we pay £45(ignoring price increase) for XL virgin tv, L phone and this 10Mb/s internet... Friend is helping me arrange for us to transfer to mates rates now though so ill be on 60Mb/s or possibly 120Mb/s next year
I'm saying it's abysmal. The network is so bad that they don't even mention speeds when they sell connections because they can't make any promises at all. At least in the UK "Up to 20Mb" generally means you'll get faster speeds than a 10Mb package. So instead NZ ISPs sell data packages.
A friend here has a 100GB package and he's paying $140/month but that includes line rental. That's around £75 per month just for 100GB of internet usage and line rental, plus the cost of calls. Ours is tied into a mobile phone contract, so we don't pay for line rental despite using a phone line for the actual connection. If I opt for a recurring "double data" upgrade, it would cost me $95/month for 120GB.
Despite getting 10-15Mb in speed tests, websites are usually sluggish to load and often take a couple of attempts to load. Downloads from websites are usually around 200KB/s but Steam downloads around 1.3MB/s. Maybe it's something to do with distance from Servers.
