I have spent a few days looking at them....
and then it occured. My Tower Case has enough room for another 3 HDD's and is always on.
DOH!
Is there any benefit to a NAS box, for myself and Sair, if my PC is always on?

swhat I thought....I nearly brought into some clever marketing then, didn't I? Shiny box.....hmmm
Even for backup......put in on a SATA drive and unplug it.

Maybe you are fitting a new mainboard and you want to back your data up off the PC?
Maybe your mainboard (or raid card) fails and you lose the array or you need to get online?
Yes NAS boxes are good they sit there and are just there you aren't rebooting/upgrading/changing them all the time
so....the same as my ICYBOX SATA drive with all my back up's on it then? Which is unplugged.

Constantly spinning isn't what kills a drive, starting stopping, and heat build up would...
you could get a Linksys Nslu2 then plug the icybox into that?

It really depends on your usage is.
I'm currently in the process of adding a few drives to an old system at home and then installing Freenas to it so I can have a centralised storage area for digital images, mp3 files, video files and more so that all the devices in the house that can connect to the network have access to these.
I would be gutted if some of the drives in my system died as there is stuff I really need to backup ( nephew pics etc )
ahh....good vibes for NAS boxes in the house

I'm happy now
Hardware NAS is always a good thing. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been playing with my PC and broken something decided I've needed to upgrade.
With a NAS box, you never need to upgrade it, except perhaps the storage - and it'll complain, and continue to run if one of the disks fails. Rebuilds are usually transparent too.
I was thinking about a NAS box when I build my new machine, as opposed to just an external drive plugged in, and then mapped on every machine on the network - we shall see when the time comes though, i'd like a NAS device that supports FTP'ing into it remotely/can be a download box without a PC turned on, for downloading demos overnight etc, be a bit quieter I think!

I like NAS boxes, but if I have storage space like that, I use it for whacking great backups as well as general storage. In which case, I don't want a 100GB disk image to take ages to transfer.
I needs a 1Gbps network port. Moreover, it needs a data throughput that'll actually utilise that 1Gbps network port, a bit like the N5200-based Thecus 1U4500S I reviewed recently.
Bit expensive for me, though.
Still, keep an eye out over the summer, when we might be doing a piece on building your own NAS box... one that's cheap and speedy, but you can leave alone once built.
add low power and quiet to that and it sounds very interesting shall look forward
Edit: and small.. im asking too much here arent i?
