    Virgin Cable Router/Modem

    Hi,

I'd like to hear a recommendation from some one who's using Virgin DSL/Cable on either a wirless router with a 4 port cable access via RJ45 hub/switch built in.

While I appricaite broad band suppliers do not make a difference to the hardware, I'd certainly appriciate hearing from somone who has one working and performing well.

I am not a broadband / cable guru so advice would be appriciated.

My WGR614 works fine (cable) with all 4 wired ports and with 3 wireless concurrently. I had some musician guys visit my son with some of their PCs and lappys, had 7 PCs running.

It refuses to upgrade the FW though, so I'm assuming it has a hardware dongle or something to prevent this.
    Cheers, David

I have virgin plan two (DSL), and I'm on a wireless router with 4 port switch built in. It performs absolutely fine off peak (see the speed test results thread), but I suffer from contention where I am (flats) so peak speeds aren't good.

For reference, the router is a 3Com office connect 11g and it performs brilliantly.

WRT54 here - Keep meaning to install linux on it, but other stuff keeps getting in the way.

Have also used a Draytek - solid routers, but a lot more expensive than the Linksys above.

Just stay away from Netgear! On 2 seperate occasions on setting them up on friends connections, they have been terrible.

Oh, this is the freebie router from Virgin/Telewest btw ! Dunno if the deal is still open, might be worth a call if you are Virgin ex Telewest.

Linksys WRT54G myself with a Virgin Cable modem. Flashed the firmware to DD-WRT though - seems to be more stable

Buffalo Airstation 125 High-speed Mode Cable/DSL WireLess Smart Router. £28.66 from Scan - with free delivery to you of course, as a HEXUS stalwart.

Works well for me here on Virgin cable - as per my recent postings here.

Oh, and don't be confused by the age of that thread, I resurrected it recently as a result of finding there a recommendation for the Buffalo.

Co-incidentally, when I've finished posting this message, I'm off round a mate house this evening to install one of these products (and a companion PCI wireless card) for use on AOL broadband.

Just a thought, you may have compatability problems using a DSL/Cable Router with ADSL line as I believe you'll require an ADSL router.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong

    I'll do that for you!

There were no issues - well, none of the type you mention, anyway.

What I did was set up AOL using the supplied broadband modem - connected to the PC by Ethernet - then turned off the modem, connected it to the Buffalo router and turned that on again, so that AOL in effect sees it as the PC (which meant I also had to input the AOL user name (including ".aol.com") and password.

Then I connected the PC to router and I was away.

Well, away to the extent that I then needed to set up the wireless side and though that worked okay on two PCs, two others wouldn't see the router wirelessly at all because each was set up to see an educational network and that somehow impacts on wireless networking.

One of those non-connecting still needs to see an educational network, so I'll need to speak to that establishment about how to get it working.

The other no longer needs to - but does need to connect to this router from time to time. However, it's comprehensive cacked up so I'm going to have to use a little Unix utility to take control of the administrator ID and unlock it from whatever it's currently locked into.

    Wish me luck!

Bottom line, though, related to the Buffalo - it works fine with ADSL modems or cable modems - assuming these are of the sort that connect to the PC via Ethernet, not USB.

    ~stands corrected~

Great news too, as I've read good reviews regarding the Buffalo routers.

It's not clear from your posting what kit was used.

    Care to tell us?

    Certainly,

I was a bit worried by Agents comments on Netgear, however my college had already gone out and picked up a netgear broadband router and wirless in oen (I'll get the model number) however 10 minutes read on the instruction manual and it was very straight forward and easy to install and configure. Its actually working VERY well so I must have been fortunate on the version/config working on the netgear.

I will update with exact version number when I check on it later in the week.
