ADSL - Going wireless- Advice needed

Can anyone help me please, I want to go wireless with my Laptop and PC but do not know where to start, I am not very technical. I have looked on Ebay but there is so much choice, what do I need? I am connected to AOL (through BT) with a ADSL line, I think?

I am really worried about security, do all of the routers come with encryption built in?

    Advice in SIMPlE terms please!!!!

    Angie

Well it will be ADSL if he's connecting with AOL over a BT line. I would suggest:

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?NGR-WN311+

    and

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?NGR-NEXTB

That's pretty much the setup I have - although I have 802.11n built into my laptop.

The big Netgear box will replace you AOL modem/router.

Once you get it, have your local geek:

Lock it down by MAC address
    Turn on encryption
    Turn off SSID broadcast

or post back here, and I can help you do it.

You might be able to get the same stuff cheaper elsewhere, I bought from Novatech as I could go pick it up the same day.

i know, thats not what i asked.

AOL is giving out free wireless routers at the min so its one of those that he's got then all he needs are the cards.

    Hi Smallsteps,

My advice would be to get off that piece of junk right now!

A friend of mine had one of these on Tiscali and it's throughput was awful, it was unreliable and security was utterly none existent.

We switched to a bargain basement BT Voyager (still crap but it was under a tenner used) which connected to his PC via ethernet, immediately doubled his throughput, got wireless (802.11g) and a VERY basic firewall.

Will be upgrading him again soon and whilkst I am personally a fan of 3com equipment (I've used it professionally for years) I know the Linksys seems to be very much favoured around here with third party firmware, which I'm currently investigating for my home.

Your REALLY need to get off the USB ADSL modem though, they are nothing but trouble.

    Best wishes,

    Dave

Basically you need a ADSL wireless Router/modem (make sure it has a modem built in).

I've used this in the past.

And either a PCMCIA or USB wireless adapter for your laptop (USB adapter comes with above package free) and either a PCI (internal) or USB (external) adapter for your PC (I'd go with PCI personally).

    My System: Coolermaster Centurion 5 (black) case, Intel E6750 Core2Duo, Tagan Easy-Con 530W, Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI, OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC, Samsung SpinPoint 200Gb SATA2 / 2 x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200Gb SATA, 256Mb Sapphire ATI PCI-E X1950PRO, Creative X-Fi Xtreme 7.1, 19" Daewoo W9ZQ Black Widescreen TFT, 4Mb Virgin Cable Broadband (formerly Blueyonder) with Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G and DD-WRT firmware.

    Hi

Another voice to the chorus of agreement with b0redom.

I've just bought a Rangemax and can wholeheartedly recommend it.

I had a bundled modesm (Zyxel 660R) which was absolute crap, it ran hot and wanted to retrain the connection all the time.

I use the rangemax in a wired config on my PC but have used the wireless also and its rock-solid.

So go and buy one, you'll find it's money well spent.

aol give out free dg834g's i think but force you into a 1yr contract for doing so.

heard their service is pretty shoddy at the mo tho.

    don't buy a dg834pn useless piece of junk i am on my 3rd 1 in 6 months.

also the netgear usb wireless adapters are terrible constant drop outs and they overheat alot.
