    homeplug gaming problem?

Hi, I'm having major problems with online games (PC FPS) for the past few months, the connection keeps dropping in spikes.

E.G it will be fine for 5 mins then randomly it will continuously stop and start each with a period of about 0.5 seconds between them and then randomly cuts out completely for 1-10 mins
I know its not just the game because obviously you don't notice that smaller lag spike when browsing the Internet, but when the game cuts out completely i cannot browse Internet etc either. But the other computer connected directly to the Internet (both comps are on router then mine is on homeplug) never loses connection.

Sorry for the blabbering but its getting to the point its unplayable

Im considering getting a wireless N router, Would that be the next best thing to a wire? (distance would be about 30m away and 2 thin walls) I used to have a wireless G router and the ping spikes were nowhere near as bad as what im getting now ^^

Stick with IEEE 802.11g, it's a fully stable and mature standard, 802.11n is only a draft standard.. It's not ethernet, but it'll do the job. I'm not big on the homeplug gimmick, power lines were never meant as a communication medium.

Homeplug sucks! I tried them, and had to RMA them

I use 802.11n - I get 240-270mpbs from a bedroom upstairs to a cupboard under the stairs. The range and signal quality seems to be much better.

    Of course YMMV.

Great! but are thier any wireless gamers out there? i just want to know if its a better option.

Mmm, just a thought ill assume that the powerline works in Packets (because i keep getting packetloss)

And so does wireless right? basicly what im asking is will the wireless connection be sameish ping, and no cutting out! (at least not every 5 mins)

Yes, G will be as reliable as wireless can be, its a fully ratified standard there wont be equipment/signalling conflicts and more than sufficant bandwidth for gaming/internet/light local networking.

Of course the only way to ensure full reliability is real ethernet cable runs.

As for a router, I've found Netgear equipment to be fairly reliable, I owned the DG834G for 4 years had it running 24/7 before I accidentally damaged it, worked great, even though I rarely used the wireless when I did it worked throughout the house.

Jammer - all networking stuff works in packets. Go for either G or N stuff (depending on your budget). If you're using a desktop rather than a laptop, get a PCI card - they're much better than those awful USB dongles.

I've heard a lot of bad things about BT Homehub as well, even in the paper and that's saying something. All ISP provided routers are awful cheap things.

The netgear router I mentioned is cheaper than a night on the raz and will give you years of service.

    Re: homeplug gaming problem?

I know this doesn't help your predicament, but I've been using Zyxel 200MB homeplugs, and they are spot on. I've got 3. Admittedly I've had to RMA 2 of them but I've always had a brand new one sent back to me within days.

Wireless G would be totally adequate for online gaming. So long as you have a good signal from PC to router.

You could go for a N router, if it also covers G. If you have an N wireless card in your PC then it's a no brainer. Go N.

The new Xbox Slim has N built in (plus you can buy an N adapter for the current Xboxs). N isn't so draft anymore. It's becoming the standard.

wireless and online FPS eg CS: S do not go together well, the delay in packets being sent will get you killed.

    Re: homeplug gaming problem?

Homeplugs (for me anyway) are absolutley great, i have been using them for about 3-4 years, and i can say hand on heart that i have never had a single issue, no lag spikes no drops in signal, and i certainly put it through its paces, i game alot online as well as stream HD content to most rooms in the house and it does it flawlessly.....

    * Which homeplugs are you using just out of interest ?

It could well be the wiring in your house that is the problem ? obviously Homeplugs are not going to work for everyone.

I, like Lord Midas are using the Zyxel 200Mbps ones and they are spot on ...

I would also recommend changing your router, homehub is indeed "crap"

    Re: homeplug gaming problem?

This thread shows that WiFi versus homeplug is very situational. In my flat (not even a house) all forms of WiFi are near useless for persistent use. Probably a combination of double brick walls and steel stubs, along with almost every neighbour running a form of WiFi router set up.

I’ve tried various brands from B to N and all struggle for media streaming, with N clearly out performing the rest (as expected). Even then it doesn’t hold a candle to homeplugs for me. Thanks to copper wiring that’s only several years old, the Zyxel 200Meg plugs (have 3) are very stable for my daily use.
